ID:	19396Want to take my full size grill to TX this year. Got a cargo tray that slides in the bumper hitch. Rated to 500lbs. Grill is probably 150 or less. Minus gas tank. Got it all strapped down and am happy with the security. What I’m scared of is the wobble of the whole setup. Seems like any bump in the road could bounce it into the trailer. Thought about a strap to the ladder but worried bouncing breaking the ladder connections to the trailer. Does anyone have experience with this type of cargo tray. Good or bad. Thanks in advance. Attached pictures. Don’t know if I did it right.

You could try a hitch extender to pull it a little further away from the trailer. You would loose some tounge weight but by the sounds of it you have lots to play with if the BBQ is only 150lbs.

Not to criticize your way of securing the load but I don't think it will stay there going down the road. It looks like it is top heavy. I think I would look at an alternative way to transport it. JMO

From my experience with that carrier, you will drag it off on the first good dip or driveway entrance.

I'd suggest taping a piece of paper to the grill....If found please call......

Honestly from the pics can't really tell if it might drag, but to me looks like it should travel ok, if not add more straps.
To stop the wobble they make couple different hitch pin tightening devices, 1 goes inside the hitch, the if he goes over it, that takes a lot of the slop out of the receiver, might try one.

I would take ahold of it and see how much bounce and wiggle it has. Then realize it will be doing that same movement maybe faster and more at highway speeds and bumpy roads. That bounce and wiggle will cause failure at some point.

Good grills are top heavy, big cast-iron base and lid sitting on top of a 3' tall flimsy sheet metal cabinet. I feel like this could only end badly.

Is there a reason this is a better idea than something that becomes more compact like a Weber Q2200? I know they are not a full size grill but still offer a very sizable cook top and are more camping friendly. buying a new Q2200 will be cheaper than having to salvage this one off the side of the road.....

Keep in mind, when you hit a bump or pothole on the road, those straps are under tension. The extra force from the load shifting creates a big spike in the tension they are under.

All good points. Think I'll buy one in TX and donate it to the Clubhouse when we come home in April. Thanks to everyone.

Hi
Please be aware that due to the location of your barbeque, that the weight estimated at 150#'s will be considerably higher, there is a formula which you plug in the cantilever distance from the rear axle which multiplies the weight. Great location but a "high shock" area, please make sure that your bracket structure is rated for the calculated weight...as you may find yourself dragging the load down the highway without knowing it, I have seen a few generators being dragged !

To keep the grill from hitting the back of the rig I’d use a foam or inflated inner tube. They will stop most movement. Also run the straps over the bumper and secure it better.

Be cautious with using foam or an inner tube to "tuck" between the grill and the trailer rear wall. Both of those will rub the FILON and eventually (1 mile or 1000 miles, who knows how long it will take) wear the clear coat off the FILON and if you use an inner tube, it'll leave a black ring where the fiberglass "fibers" rub the black rubber. From my experience, you won't be able to clean the rubber out of the fiberglass substrate, so painting the rear wall is the only way to remove the black ring. YMMV

First of all I would replace the pin on the hitch and replace it with hard bolt (5 lines on the Head) so there is no play then I would strap it to the RV frame. this is the voice of experience. I lost a load on I95 and this is what an old timer showed me never had the problem again.
