Propane

So I was checking out the RV "Check list"....and it said to turn the propane off after each trip....do you all do this? I must say that I have not....now...I have noticed in the past that if I left the BBQ propane on...5 gallon......it leaked out. But, I have never lost any propane on an RV..and I've had a few...but...I'm willing to change if it is wise. So...turn it off after each trip....or leave it on...pros and cons.....

Thanks all

If I'm going to store the RV for longer than a couple of days and plan to turn off the refrigerator/don't plan to use the furnace, I'll turn off the propane as well. I've never had a "detectable" leak, and have never smelled propane, but if I store the trailer for a couple of months or longer, it seems that the propane tanks are always "close to empty" when I get ready to use the trailer again. Just like the BBQ at home, somewhere and somehow the gas manages to escape..... So, just like the batteries, you can't rely on the "battery cutoff switch" nor can you rely on the appliance controls. At least that's been my experience, so I just turn the tanks off and haven't had to refill a "full tank" 3 months later.......

Same here. Don't know where it goes but I just turn them off. Left my trailer at the dealership for over 2 months and got it back Friday. Checked the LP tanks and one is empty - it wasn't that way when it went in. Don't know how much was in it but I do know it's empty now.

Never have turned off except when working in the system, I have lived in several gas houses and never turned it off. Mentioned this to a propane service person once and he agreed better for all the valves to be pressurized.

Turn it off! Things that you can't control.....maybe a small leak, how about a hose that blows off or a fitting that breaks (I had that happen not long ago). I had bought a brand new "Y" connector to hook to one of the propane tanks. One side of the Y went to the automatic transver valve/regulator and the other side of the Y went to my Weber grill. Sometime during the night, the plastic know that you use to screw the Y adapter onto the propane tank cracked and broke. The fitting didn't come out enought to engage the safety flow device...at least for a while. This could have been a very bad situation for sure....and on a brand new fitting. Trust me, from now on, when I'm done witht the propane, the tank valve will be shut off.

I turn it off after each trip. The lines do seem to stay pressurized.

I turn it off for safety, it's only a few turns and you're safe. Also in BC it has to be turned off and have a tag while on any of the BC ferries.

I agree, turn them off when not in use and be safe, as said, a line or fitting could blow, why take the chance. I always turn the propane off on my home bbq when not in use. No harm no foul.....

We have fulltimed for almost five years, and have never turned off the propane system, and have never experienced a leak. I do check the o-rings occasionally when reattaching a tank after getting it filled. If all the fittings are tight and leak tested, and the o-rings are in good shape, there should be no problem. A leakdown test should be performed as part of a good maintenance program, to verify the system is safe.

X2 on the BBQ. My friends think that I'm nuts for turning off the LP on my BBQ but then again they've never seen a faulty one blow up.

Turn off once the refrigerator has been emptied.

Also, most of the time I only line up one tank for service. Only time I line up both tanks is if the furnace will be running allot and I know one tank is getting near empty. The auto transfer valve worked as designed.

I try to remember to close them after a trip. I wouldn't want a leak to cause a fire and total the trailer, even if I do have gap insurance. Thanks for reminding me to check it tomorrow.
On second thought.....

I'm not going to be much help because I think it is certainly best to turn it off. There is then no possibility of it leaking out or causing a problem. That said, I forget more times than not to turn it off and this has been for the past 30 years. No harm. Never seem to loose propane and have never had a problem.

I turn ours off when we store it for the winter, it's a 2015 and I've already had to replace the 30lb pressure regulator on the spare side and the Auto-Changeover LP Regulator on the main side.

If I would have left them on I'd also be buying to tank refills, or worse if the leaking gas caught a spark!

Always turn them off after each trip. Why? Not sure...just always have.
