315RLS issues

We purchased a 315RLS in January 2019 after loosing one to hurricane Michael in October 2018. We had the typical equipment tour by the vendor and my bad I did not pay attention to all of the details concerning the tank valves. The grey #2 tank for the kitchen is located under the unit behind another line is basically unassailable unless you crawl under the unit "in the mud". Opening is pulling down but closing is pushing up which is more difficult. I contacted Keystone customer assistance and their response is it is built per design specs. I asked to talk to an engineer and was told they do not come to work every day and I could not talk to them. No offer to revise so the valve is more convenient--it is just built as designed. I have found that Keystone is not interested in customer relations. The only response is as designed.

I recommend the new folks look somewhere else for a 5th wheel!!

I have the same model and I'll admit that the 2nd grey tank handle is in an ackwards position.

A design flaw in an otherwise decently designed coach. Yeah, there are few more too.

But this is my 5th RV in many years and it ain't a show stopper for us. Disappointing, yes. But not the end of the world.

They all have issues. Take a deep breath, it could be worst.

I agree they all have issues. My only problem is that the fix is very simple and any qualified engineer would look at the customer side of the problem and redesign. I would mean moving the valve approximately 6 inches to a horizontal run. No additional cost.

Keystone does not listen to it's customers for improvements or changes. Without us they go broke!!!!!!!!!!!

In years past I had a Cougar and a M HC with a drain handle in the frame. Both were under slide. Before putting that slide out I pulled it with a grabber. Since both were galley drains I left them open. At close the grabber was used to push it closed. Then we left the water run for seven minutes and filled the sink. Opened again to flush, closed and added water and a chemical. Never a problem.
On my Montana I’d like to ask the engineer (?) why he thinks the clothes washer water should go into the half bath black tank.

preyou it is just plain silly to expect to be transferred to an engineer. you think GM or Ford would transfer you?
The best you can expect is to call and express your concern or suggestion and then follow up with a letter.
Keystone does respond to issues. and they do listen...this is based on my own rv issues in the past.

The people who design them and build them most likely never live in them. Plus the line guys pretty much do within specs what is easiest and fastest to get their daily quota in.

Even if the engineers called for placing it in a different place there is no guarantee it would go there.

Cut in a terminal valve in a spot of your choosing and leave the inconvenient open, never to be touched again. PITA? Yep. FIXED? Yep.

Or, take your car to almost any automotive "dealer" service center and ask to speak to the mechanic that worked on your car.... You'll get the service writer who, in many dealerships, is the best "BS'er" that will attempt to answer your questions. Ask for the actual "wrench turner".... Ain't happening most places......

We have a similar (if not the same) drain valve for the galley on our 327RLK. I’ve looked at trying to bring that valve handle out to the side and put it in the “to hard to do” category. Fortunately we don’t have to drain the galley at every stop.

Replace those PITA valves with 12 volt operated valves & put the switch wherever it's most handy to you.

Or how about a cable type handle bringing the handle to the side of the RV. All three of mine are operated about 2 ‘ from the actual valve.

Would work but the valve is vertical and not sure how to attach without having cable hanging down

If you install a "twist on terminal valve" at the 3" outlet on the side of the trailer, you can leave the galley tank valve open and control the dumping from the terminal valve. The only "drawback" to that configuration is that the exposed drain line from the galley tank to the terminal connection (if it's exposed under the trailer) would be subject to freeze damage if you winter camp) If you don't winter camp, that would not be an issue and if you do, then during the winter, use the OEM galley valve to prevent water from standing in the exposed drain line.

A few years back I called Keystone to get a wiring diagram for the antenna system and to make a few suggestions to improve their design of the hatches. Their response was they don't give out any drawings and they are professional trailer makers and don't need suggestions.

When we were shopping for a 5er last year, the Cougar 315RLS was #1 on my list except that we have a F-250. Personally, I think its just a bit too heavy for a 3/4 ton and a TV upgrade was not going to happen, so I went with a different 5er that's 1000# lighter. That said, if I had bought it, I would probably have installed remote 12V valves like in travelin texans' link.

Keystone's Attitude

I have 2019 Alpine 3400RS, spoke with Keystones Tracey Peffley about the need for a wiring diagram. The two lights over the sink bar come on with the rest of the kitchen lights, more lights than I need, especially when those are the only lights I want to use at the time. My Keystone Outback had them separate, so I know it can be designed correctly. I was told they have no diagrams as they change quickly.

I will just have to tear into it someday.

We have a 29rls cougar lite travel trailer. Our grey tank for the galley is also located under the slide behind the wheel. That's the most complaining I hear from my husband! I bought two about 5-6 inch extenders for both drains. That helps the issue of climbing under to hook up both. The extension for the pull faces more to the ground so not an easy fix. Tried getting longer pulls but didn't help the grey line. That's one of the items of things to look for when buying a new unit for us. Has to be in a more convient location.

This is kinda funny.

When we bought our 26RBSWE, DW was quite disappointed that one of the three cubbies in the pantry was completely blocked off by a screw-in panel across the front. Investigating, I found antenna and power wiring coming out of the control-panel wall near the door, and strung haphazardly across the pantry width to the side of the TV recess where all the outlets were.

Upon inspection, I found that there was more than enough slack cable to route everything through a length of loom at the upper rear of the cubby; screw the hanging splitter to the wall, add a couple of simple cable-management anchors, then fab a simple false wall to cover the rear of the receptacles and their cabling.

Result: 50% increase in pantry space for the DW, and a pantry that no longer looks like brain damage at first sight.

(Image is of the area after cable routing had been tamed, but before loom and false wall were installed.)

Being "professional RV builders" simply means they get paid to do so, has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of work.
