Rivet Nuts

I recall posters saying they have used rivet nuts in their units. How has that worked in the luan on the inside of the exterior walls? Thinking of using them to secure the plastic piece that secures the blinds.

I don't know that a "true Rivet Nut" will hold in luan. They are typically only used with a "precision drilled hole" and in metal sheeting.

You might find that a "different type of rivet nut, more like a "cross cut rivet nut" will work better as it has larger surfaces "behind the luan". Here's a photo of a "true rivet nut and a "cross cut style".

The vendor I contacted supplies what the call PlusNuts which are similar to your suggestion. I may buy a few and experiment in some spare luan I have.

This style of anchor will work on thin wall material quite well and once installed, you likely will never need to replace it. You do need a hole large enough to get the toggle part into the wall, and you will need the part you are wanting to attach to the wall installed on the screw before inserting the toggle.

I've used rivet nuts in aircraft applications and works great. I'm planning on using in my garage area to replace screws holding diamond plate that go nowhere. The problem I'm seeing some areas are a wood/fiber paneling the rivet nut requires a metal attach point.

Used these with a dab of adhesive as I screwed it in, had very good luck. Also can remove the screw without loosing the anchor down the wall. I usually pre-drilled the starter hole & cut the point off before inserting so it wouldn't be too long.
