30amp in a 50amp site

Our site tomorrow will be 50amp. Our trailer is 30amp.

We've never stayed where there is 50amp and the campground isn't answering their phones for me to ask...

"Do I need to quickly run out and buy a 30 to 50 converter, or will there be an option to plug my 30amp in without a converter?"

Odds are there will be a 30A receptacle on the same pedestal. I say odds are because I haven’t ever seen a 50A spot not have a 30A plug. We have had a couple of customers say they have been to a newer CG here in the west and the spaces only had 50A service.

Personally I wouldn’t worry about it, I’m sure the CG will have the adapter in the clubhouse for sale, maybe marked up but I’d be willing to take the chance you won’t need it.

Most campgrounds have power poles with both 50 and 30 amp plugs. There are a few (very few) that have 50 amps only. All of the campgrounds where I've stayed that are 50 amp only do have 50/30 dogbone adapters to loan to campers who have 30 amp trailers and don't have their own adapter.

If I were you, I would not go buy one now, but tomorrow during the trip, call the campground and ask if the power pole has both 30 and 50 amp plugs. Chances are they do.

At your leisure, while you're in a camping store, I'd pick up a 50/30 amp dogbone. Often the 50 amp plug is in better condition than the 30 amp plug. If that's the case, use the dogbone and plug into 50 amps. It'll protect your power cord plug from being damaged from arcing and eventually overheating. Loose plug connectors on power pedestals is a problem in a lot of campgrounds. Using a dogbone will protect your power cord and it's cheaper to buy a new dogbone than to buy a new power cord....

But, no, I wouldn't go out to buy one tonight, you should be OK, especially if you can get in touch with the campground tomorrow while towing.

Safe Travels !!!

The hardware store is 3 minutes away and I picked one up after dinner. I like your reasoning for using the dogbone, regardless if there's a 30plug.

I have been to campgrounds that had 50A specific sites. Some were 30A only and some are mixed. Always call and determine what it is you're getting. Also, always carry various dogbones to take care of any situation you encounter. Sometimes you may land in a site you think is going to work, it doesn't and you move presenting you with some new utility challenge.

Thanks everyone. They had 2 plugs, so we used the 30 amp one (after inspecting the plug).

Thanks again!

I learned early to purchase a 50a to 30a adapter. I thought every campsite listed as 50a would have a 30a receptacle. I learned the hard way that some don't have 30a. I had to reconnect the truck and move sites. Now, I typically check the the pedestal before unhooking (mainly to check for miswiring).

I was at Jonathan Dickinson SP in Hobe Sound, Florida 2 winters ago. The 30 amp receptacle went bad, they sent a guy to look at it and he said he had to order parts. Used my 50/30 dogbone the rest of the stay.
