What is this?

Looking underneath our Cougar bath cabinet and wondering if this is a valve at the top of the two white water hoses. It's square black plastic. Can't turn it, and don't want to force it. Any help with identifying this is appreciated!

And, why do pictures go upside down when uploading to my post? I even tried editing on iPad so they are upside down to start with, hoping they would be right side up! I must be doing something wrong

That is the backflow preventer for the black tank flush.. get to know it intimately as you will be replacing it sooner than later...

Well that is.... if you use the black tank flush..

When you take photos with an iPhone or iPad, and the device is upside down, the photos will be upside down when transferred to a non apple computer.

Something to remember when you are winterizing as this is not part of any other system.

This is good to bring up....I can't recall if I did anything with this or not as part of the winterizing, and I do recall seeing something like this in the bathroom on my passport under the sink.

Lets assume a problem has occurred with it. What would be the best way to check it? Remove it? Or would it be easier to just replace it at that point?

I ask because I did use the black tank flush last year...

Good topic .....

Especially the winterizing. The park I am in does this and all lines are guaranteed when they do it. I likely have a few extra lines like that flush line, as well as washing machine hook up, that we did not use but it's possible there is water in there somewhere.

With the flush - is the best way to test - turn on for a few seconds and then look for leaks?

Mine doesn't look like that.
That looks a little more expensive than mine. Mine looks like a plastic flap encased in plastic.
kinda on the "T" shaped side with an intake and exhaust.
really that looks a little more substantial than mine and its going on 4 years old.

After hearing all the stories about the backflow valve I decided to completely remove it. I took it out and replaced it with an elbow. Works great and I don't have to worry about water all over in the vanity in bath room.

By doing this you can not protect the fresh water that the rest of us drink. There is nothing stopping your black tank from backing up into the fresh water system. Please post where you will be camping so we know.

It really isn't that big of a deal to screw a brass backflow preventer on to the hose end..

Yes I use a back flow preventer and the only place I flush my tanks is at the sewer dumps and the taps there are not for drinking water.

Doing it this way is definitely better than waiting for the original to fly to pieces and then have water shooting all over the inside of your bathroom like what happened to quite a few people according to their posts on this site and other forums I have read.

Isn't there a brass replacement available from somewhere?

Lowe's or Home Depot, usually found in the "underground irrigation" section.

Howdy All;

Javi has an excellent suggestion, and one that I have used since I
replaced mine with an elbow 3 years ago (almost), I used a backflow preventer like this, http://www.doitbest.com/categories/backflow-preventer, (only mine is Brass), attached to the hose to break the suction
and allows the water in the system to drain into the tank and not meander
into the drinking water. Haven't been sick from it yet, oh yea, I fulltime.

I just replaced mine with a Foot Valve (one way check valve) in line behind the inlet and put a elbow under the sink. The Vacuum Breaker restricts the flow. I winterize it by just blowing air through it.
