Towing speeds
I have a new 327RES My question is how fast down the road is a good av. speed I have a 3/4 to chevy with a 6 liter 6 speed auto It pulls good seam like plenty of power ?

I would suggest an average speed of 60 mph. What's the hurry?

On interstate highways we average 60 mph and find it both a comfortable and fuel efficient speed. Since we typically limit a days travel to 350 miles max keeping at 60 MPH has little impact on total travel time. Furthermore, should we spot something interesting, like a Cabelas, Bass Pro, or God forbid an antique shop we have time to stop.
If memory serves I think the optimal highway speed for fuel efficiency is 55 MPH. I believe the following MPG decreases over 55 MPH are close to accurate: - 60 MPH - 3%
- 65 MPH - 8%
- 70 MPH - 17%

The biggest reason (I think) to limit speed to 65MPH is because that's the max speed for ST tires. A couple of manufacturers state that you can increase 10MPH if you increase the cold pressure by 10PSI. Other manufacturers are "strangely silent" and say nothing about speeds over 65. LT tires have a different max speed, however, if you're running "Chinese maypops" it probably would be wise not to push the envelope too far by towing faster than they recommend.....
Like others have said, towing 65 vs 60 in a 7 hour day is only 35 miles further down the road.... Some may think that's critical, but for this "old retired fart" I've gone enough 35 miles further in my life without feeling the need to do it any more....
60-65 and relaxed, kinda watching the billboards to find something interesting to "take another break" is a much more relaxing trip. We'll get "there" sooner or later, no need to push it against the "weakest link's" max speed.....

After many years of driving commercial vehicles in Europe and Canada I feel that 100 Kilometers per hour 63 MPH is good for fuel economy, good for the vehicle and you make good time. Just my thoughts after over a million miles of experience

I vary depending on weather. Hot days on dark blacktop road I drop to 60. on cool days or a light, gray concrete road I'll go 65. Not sure how much difference it makes in the tires temps, but it makes a difference in my peace of mind. As stated before, it doesn't make a lot of difference in the end result for distance traveled. I have been passed many, many times by people going 70 plus. Can't tell you how many times I have re-passed them while they are pulled over changing a tire. As for fuel economy, I haven't noticed a difference between 60 and 65.

Even though we aren't retired, we still keep it at 60-65. The tires are the biggest reason for us also, why borrow trouble? Besides it's vacation time, sit back & enjoy the ride.

THE ST TIRE LIMIT IS 65 And as others have said whats the hurry? Also never tow faster than your guardian angle can fly! from experiance I HAD A TIRE BLOW ON THE 5ER AND I WAS VERY HAPPY TO ONLY BE GOING 55 AT 70 THINGS WOULD HAVE ENDED BADLY

I've got full gauges on my CTD and my pyrometer and boost gauge show my sweet spot at 1800rpm or 62mph.

Another way to look at it..do the Math! I'm not very good at Math but...
70mph x 3hr = 210 miles = increased blowout potential = $$$ in Repairs
65mph x 3hr = 195 miles = an extra 5 minutes per hour
Weigh the risk benefit ratio and I think I will drive 65....

Another way to look at it:
Avg MPG @ 70MPH = 7.8
Avg MPG @ 65MPH = 9.8
2000 mile trip at 70MPH = 256 gallons @ 3.79 = $970
2000 mile trip at 65MPH = 204 gallons @ 3.79 = $773
Total increase in "behind the wheel time" at the slower pace: 2.2 hours
That's $197 savings. Enough for an extra night (or two) at a good campground and dinner out at a nice restaurant both nights....
OR: one Maxxis 8008 installed and balanced plus some left over for BK or McD's......

A new Maxxis installed and out the door with metal valve stems and balanced.$147.00 each, so you have $50 extra dollars. Thats in central NC! So really you could get a nice steak dinner for two or more around here!
I just replaced two of them, So now all 4 tires are maxxis 8008s.
And I drove 60-62mph this last trip going and coming to campground.
I just checked mileage on both fill ups. I averaged 11.59mpg which is very good..and I am very pleased with that mpg.

I've found that traffic and road conditions permitting 62-63 MPH is a good cruising speed for our truck and the rig as a whole travels well at that speed. Seems to be a reasonable balance between speed and economy. Going much faster changes the ETA little but affects the fuel economy negatively far more.

Deffinately only speeding up to 65 max. Try to maintain at 63mph. Tire blew out in Tennesse with damage to the undercarriage, and wheel fender trim. I had a brand new TPMS for this trip also. Wouldn't go without it. With 6 tires back there, its the only way to know whats happening.
Good news / Bad news...
The good news, there was an RV repair center only 1 mile ahead.
The bad news, the attendant wanted to back my rig into his bay to do the tire work. He was only 23yrs old and a little green, but seemed like he knew his 'stuff'. Well...he backed it up alright, turned way to sharp and put the trailer right through my trucks rear window!. (Yes I do have a slider). A#@@#$, lkjff!!!!!$^&^^/. Didn't loose my cool but wound up owning the place. Lost 4hrs off return trip.
Purpose of this rant...always stay with your rig!

I guess my question would be ...... did your brand new TPMS give you any kind of warning of this tire blow out? Or did it just go "boom"?
And, of course ...... Was the tire one of "those" kind?

Tire was a carlisle 18. And the BOOM came first...then the TPMS. The tpms will deffinatley tell you where a problem exist, but if the tire goes...it goes.
