Battery Disconnect

Just purchased a 2010 Keystone Bullet - might it have a battery disconnect? Where would it be? How do y'all handle the battery when RV is in storage?

Thanks!

Most factory installed battery disconnects that I have seen are installed on the front wall of the trailer, behind the battery tray, out in the pass through storage.

I bring my batteries (I use two for boondocking) home and set them each up with a Battery Tender and monitor the water level about monthly. Batteries discharge in storage when not connected to some kind of charge maintainer and after several months the discharge can be sufficient to permanently damage the battery.

Don't know about location of your disconnect, but if it's like mine, it isn't really a disconnect. I'd place one on the neg terminal of your battery bank and use instead.

This will help you with longer term storage, but as compeakw mentioned, they'll self discharge. So I bring 'em home to keep charged when storing for longer than a few months too.

Bringing them home sounds like a good option for me. Will need to get Battery Tender.

Thank you!

You're welcome. I got my Battery Tenders on clearance sale at Tractor Supply after the holidays a few years ago. Before I got them I just used the maintenance mode on my full size Schumacher battery charger.

Didn't think about Tractor Supply!

I'm pretty sure the battery that came with my 2010 Keystone Bullet is toast (was dead when I bought the trailer) - what would you recommend as replacement?

I've had good luck with the EverStart group 29 batteries from Walmart. They are only about $100, and they come with a 24 month full replacement warranty. The warranty is good from the date of purchase with your receipt or the date on manufacture on the battery without it. I had to replace one under warranty in the last fifteen years, but I've had multiple batteries that have lasted 5-6 years. The key is proper maintenance. I tried upgrading to AGM batteries a couple of years ago, but the OEM charge controller in most trailers does not have the correct charging profile for AGM batteries, so I've taken them to my cabin to use with my solar system there and gone back to the EverStart batteries for my trailer. I have two wired in parallel because I boondock most of the summer. I did have to have a an adapter made for my battery tray to accommodate two group 29 batteries. Always purchase batteries in pairs for use in parallel as your system is only as good as the weaker of the two batteries.

My battery disconnect is in the front storage compartment on the left side front wall.. Not sure your year would have the factory install of the battery switch.. you can always add one later one.. Plus I don't take my battery out.. I see no need to..My battery on my Cougar is behind the (fairing) in which the propane tanks are behind that and the battery is behind them. But I do use a Solar battery tender/charger I got on amazon..12 volt 10 watt.. I have been doing that for years..

Factory disconnect is on the positive lead. We install on the positive lead. A search of the www will yield lots of answers for both.

That's pricey for only 75 AH. You might want to look into a 6 volt in series bank (GC2) that will provide significantly more AHs (215 or more) for just a few dollars more. I just purchased 2 from Sam's Club for $89 each. $60 additional for more than 2.5 times the amp hours of that 27DC battery.

I have a 2018 Cougar TT. The switch is in the storage area BUT it does not cut off all power. I assume like others that a cutoff switch cutoff all power. No. Had a nearly dead battery after a couple of weeks. So, if you want a cutoff switch, you will have to find a suitable location to cut all power.

You might also consider a small Solar-powered Battery Tender available with several configurations. they have saved me a lot of unnecessary work.

Battery disconnect reply

I have a 2017 bullet premiere 31 bkpr and it did not have a battery disconnect. Bought one at O'Reilly Auto Parts and installed it in the battery box

I replaced my 2 x group 24, 75 AH 12 volt batteries with 2 x GC2, 235 AH 6 volt batteries.

I got them from batteries +, they had a buy on-line, pick up in store 10% off coupon, so they were less than $100 each, out the door.

The GC2 have a lot more capacity and are true deep-cycle batteries, I am happy with them.

They are the same foot print of the group 24, just a bit taller, put more weight on the tongue of the trailer and require a bit more maintenance, but I have a nifty system, from amazon, that makes re-filling them extremely easy and I expect them to last a lot longer than what they replaced.
