Hi folks

I am a new guy to this whole thing, having done almost no camping ever.

I just started a new jawb, and am So Blessed to have found this forum for the owners of the units that are the sole thing we currently offer.

Always a forum fan for many things, it was awesome to find this group which I am so proud to point out to my customers as a resource of, by and for those who are factual/experienced/irrefutably honest about the good, bad and ugly. Most especially like my fellow noobs who were my first sale recently. And even more because I was so pleased to see how relatively little the bad and ugly seem to appear even as I know too well that they are the more likely to be important enough to post about.

I am So Not Here to spam the group and hope that my participation will be allowed (though I fully understand it may not). Rather, it seems this could be a fantastic opportunity to avail myself of the resources of you folks as I try to learn more about the products I am so lucky to offer as I embark on this journey.

I need product knowledge and would also appreciate comments on what constitutes a good salesperson as I have many years of experience, but not in retail. I am therefore trying hard to learn to do the dance that will make customers feel comfortable making such a hugely important decision, even as I am so glad to say we do not employ sleazy sales tactics to close deals. It was huge to me to find that, after research in our local market, that I'd fell not only on a good, OK great, product while also working with and for a great team that is not about degrading it by being a bunch of slam and jam car lot types I could never abide or fit in with after two decades of consultative, relationship based distributor sales in my background.

We have a lot to offer at our dealership besides the great product line, but it is very, very important to me to not sell what I have not got and be knowledgeably truthful when working with folks considering the products you have already chosen to purchase. Where could I find a better place to do so? Seems to me, that would be nowhere.

To wit, I called my first customer today - Passport 2850RL, their first unit - to let them know I'd found this place. It was wonderful to be able to offer them this after the purchase; there is little I can think of that is more useful to new owners of not only Keystones, but trailers generally, than a group that contains posters like Geo...assuredly just the first who jumped out at me after some reading here.

Of course, the good-bad-and-ugly TRUTH is where that value to this place comes in, not just to buyers but to new sellers like me who strive to give a great, and factual, sales pitch. Thanks so much for it. I have already shared this site's URL a couple of times in hopes that shoppers will avail themselves of this ready opportunity to become educated and thus satisfied buyers.

Please do tell me what it was you were told that was wrong and what it is you didn't know, good-bad-or-ugly, you wished you had learned when shopping. And anything else.

Even with what I hope will become years of experience, it will be great to get your comments going forward.

As my now nascent but well defined and years long obsession with this stuff has taught me a lot, my desire to do a tenth of this guy's work on a killer old schoolie means that what I know about is rather far afield from the stuff I am selling, and loving, as I work to earn enough to pay for my project (*bus located and just waiting on me with a kinfolks inside to the owner whom I have so far not contacted but who has it sitting, lonely and in need of my love) so I can get out there with youse guys.

I cannot wait to get back to Hot Springs, NC where I fear I could just lay down and die rather than travel, in my mid-century and primitive old Wayne shorty boondocker of my dreams. You travelers would be nuts not to Get There and ASAP! The only NC town on the Appalachian Trail and also at the confluence of the French Broad River, it is a destination of nearly 200 years' duration.

Thus, your help in drinking from the fire hose of info about the product line, again good-bad-ugly, will be of the utmost usefulness in helping the good folks I serve go camping.

Another buyer I spoke with today as I enjoyed his company while he waited a fair bit of time for our guys to rewire his truck for a brake controller turned out to be not only a noob but an architect interested in a diagram, (CAD drawing mebbe), of the internals of his new Cougar TT. Such a thing would be likely a catch from the corporate folks, but I thought this would be worth mentioning nonetheless as well. Who Knows just what can be had from a group like this one?

Many Thanks for just being there and Cheers!

SalesRepGuy, let me be the first to you to the forum. There is a lot of good info here that we all learn from.

If I had to offer one thing to you to start with I would ask you to find out first what your customer is driving (or will be driving) and it's towing capacity (pull behind or 5th wheel) before showing any RV. Sure it is the customer's responsibilty to know what he can safely tow, but a little knowledge goes a long way! (Same thing goes for the license requirements for towing in various states. There is a separate thread on this in the forum).

Trailer Life (www.trailerlife.com) is a good site where the individual vehicle can be looked up.

Sure wish my sales man would have shared more of this with me when I was looking the first time.

Good Luck!

Good luck on the new position. I can appreciate your honesty and interest in this forum. If you choose to use it correctly, it can be a very valuable tool in your sales. The advice offered above is something that you hear much of on this forum. The salesman that sold me my unit added a personal touch to his service. My son had seen a trailer brochure that had toys in some of the drawers. His question to the salesman only concerned himself as to if this new trailer would come with toys in it. My salesman made sure that it did. My son has not forgotten that.

That's awesome

I have already gotten up to speed with trailer life, and had a good laugh at the Gremlin pulling the toy hauler in a recent thread here. In fact, it is what made me decide to log on.

A used unit I sold the other day turns out to have a problem with its entertainment center, probably failed optics for reading the discs.

After digging in on the matter a little bit, I called the customer back concerning this little problem I learned of on a follow-up call after their delivery. I told them to go buy some canned air from the office supply and try that.

Since the prior owner removed their TV, we were unable to test the CD/DVD player as part of our thorough PDI.

Should the unit turn out not to work, I intend to personally replace it.

And, the next time I go recycle some electronics on my day off, I will also grab a few of the many flat screens I always see when I am there.

My Service Manager let me know the other day that they frequently fix "broken" flat screen TV's by replacing an internal fuse. Perhaps I can find a TV that has only that problem which can then become a shop item for use in testing used units that come in sans TV.

If you are looking for advice and/or comments, or as you described it, "the good, the bad and the ugly", about "product knowledge" and "what constitutes a good salesperson", may I suggest the following:

1) That you start a new thread in the "odds 'n ends" section of the forum about what specific information and comments you are trying to solicit from our members rather than carrying on a discussion here in the New Member Check In. I am not sure how your description of how you handled an issue with an entertainment center at your workplace or how flat screen TV's are repaired at your facility fits into this category as this section is primarily intended for members to introduce themselves by indicating what RV they have or are intending to buy, something about their tow vehicle and for our members to extend a welcome to them.

2) That you continue to search the forum for topics pertaining to RV salespeople and Keystone products. There are threads about this topic found in Keystone Service & Warranty Issues and if you look at the Keystone Question section there is a "Satisfaction" survey of our members with Keystone products which asks "Would you Buy Another Keystone Product?" You can view the results along with comments from our members there.

Thank you.

Today was a much needed day off after two week of none (show made that happen on top of me coming in on the weekday I could have had off - after all, I need to earn an learn).

As questions arise from customers, I will avail myself of your good advice.

Welcome to the Forum and congratulations on your new job with Holiday World in Mesquite, Texas! (I guess that will be OK for me to say. ) And to start a new job then go directly to the Dallas RV SuperSale Show had to be tough!

We purchased our Alpine in Oklahoma City in June, 2010 as they were the closest Keystone dealer who handled that model. In short, the purchase process was not pleasant. We did enjoy our Alpine though. And as you have seen in my multiple verbose posts, I did more than a little modification and exploration within the unit.

However, DW and I made the decision to trade the Alpine in with your neighbor RV dealer immediately east last October. But I am proud to say that the Alpine and all my modifications are providing a warm and protected place for a pipeliner in far northwest Oklahoma! As of late, he's probably the only one on the crew getting a warm, comfortable night's sleep!

If I can help you or answer any questions, please do not hesitate to send me a Private Message (PM). My friends here at the Forum have graciously allowed me to stay even though I now have an RV of Some Other Brand (SOB). But the new Beauty2 looks great behind the Beast!

And from what I've seen, you might wrestle the "Verbose Award" away from me on the Forum!

Good Luck!

Ron
