No tunnels and few tolls. Tolls will eat you up on 95 thru NJ, Del, MD and VA
There is not a time when traffic less than horrible in DC.

We travel from upstate NY to Charleston SC, two hours down the coast. Done it many times.
We generally use this route with the exception we go I64 to Richmond and I95 from there.

Have made stops at Walnut Hills in VA, Raleigh Oaks in NC along 95, and Carolina Crossroads in NC just below the VA line. All good places.

If you are talking about the Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel you can use it as long as your propane tanks are shut off. Done that many times.

The 2 tunnels in Baltimore do not let you travel with propane onboard

If that's not too far for a 1 day drive for you I recommend it.
I second Carolina crossroads it has become our standard stop when coming and going from south FL to new england.

As far as that mess in DC and Alexandera we go around 81 to 66 to 17 it brings you out to 95 about 40 miles north of Richmond .

Way around Dc

We don't do that 4 am crap anymore once after getting up at 3am to be on the road by 4 .there was an accident and we still ended up in the traffic in Dc& Alexandria. We now go around its a little longer but a much better ride. We take 84 w to 81 to 66 e to 17 s . It brings you back to 95 in Fredericksburg just n of Richmond,we also take the bypass around Richmond be stuck on 95 it Richmond also . Done the FL to ft trip about 30 times or more sometimes as many as 4 times a year.

Hi, We have done all of the above routes traveling between Somers NY and Calabash NC, 30 minutes above Myrtle Beach, Rt 84 to 81, The longer you stay on Rt 81 the better, rt 64 off Rt 81 is our best shot. Have done it about 40 times, safe travels

Americamps

Another vote for Americamps in Ashland, Va. Right next to Basspro & Camping World if you need anything.

Have to disagree with staying on 81 all the way down to 64. Using Mapquest to route from Middletown VA ( Middletown is where Rt 66 connects to 81) to Richmond.

81/66/17/95. 136 milles, 2 hr 16 min.

81/64 185 miles. 2 hr 51 min.

I have tried both routes and the times Mapquest estimates are very close.

I agree with times for 66/64. We do 64 because we stop at Wallnut Hills RV for overnight and it's right where 64 and 81 connect. I only do 250 mi/day due to back/sciatica issues. When just traveling by car we will do 66/81.
