Question Hot Water Heater

Hi all,

I have a question. I have a 2008 Raptor TS3812. The last time I used it the water heater would not work on Propane. I had to switch on the electricity to get hot water. This is the first time it has done this. We usually just use the propane and not electricity. I was thinking that I maybe have gotten a weak propane refill, if that could happen. It does try to light the propane : but it does not light and then it shuts off.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Jeff

Need to be Sure first your getting gas to the burner. It ten goes into a tube that directs it into the fire box. This is where it should light. If the tube has a spider web or some kind of obstruction it will fail to light.
You should be able to smell the gas if gas is presant.

If you just filled the cylinders, then it may take 3 or 4 tries. If it lights and goes out right away, then the flame sensor/igniter May be faulty.

Check and lite the burner on the stove first. If there is gas there then you know you have gas.

There is no problem with the stove. It works as it should. only the hot water heater has a problem. sometimes it works and then on the next restart it doesn't work.

mybluox, Howdy;

I had the same problem (mine is also a 2008), scratched my head and as you asked
the collective. Got the same answers you did above, so, I took my trusty can of air that
I use to blow off the computer and blew out the burner tube of the HWH and it's
been working fine ever since. Must have been a cobweb in there. They get built pretty
quickly as I'm a fulltimer and leave the HWH on all the time. Give it a good blow job
it should be a happy HWH ...

I have a question regarding the electric portion of the HWH, mine just doest seem to keep the water hot as long as the gas. I had it on electric and was rinsing dishes and the water was getting cooler and cooler, I don't think I use all six gallons to rinse my dishes. The switch was on at the control center and the little switch at the HWH itself was also on. Is the gas just better?

If you used it all rising dishes, that's a lot of water... The first thing that needs to work is the thermostat for electric heat (dunno if it's the same thermostat for gas).

It sounds like the way you are doing it is that you're using both electric and gas and indicating that the hot water "lasts longer" - in that event, you're using BOTH and yes, it does have some impact..

I'm not using gas and electric at the same time. I either have it on gas or on electric but not simultaneously. I didn't think about different thermostats though I will look into that.

If you open the water heater panel you will see two reset buttons located on a black panel about 3" by 3". One button is for electric and one is for propane. Each is a separate thermostat. If you are not happy with the temperature of the water when on electric, remove the black panel I spoke of and read the part number on that thermostat. Bring the number to your favorite parts person and go up a few degrees. The unit itself will only cost about $15.00. Be sure to keep the old for a spare. And when working on the water heater please, please have your electricity turned off.

When plugged into shore power, it’s not going to hurt anything to run both electric and LP. You will have a faster recovery.

If you use a can of the computer dust off be very cautious and don't attempt to light off the hwh while spraying it. Most of those computer dust off products are actually butane and are extremely flammable.

I was able to go blow out the propane tube and test the heater. I turned it on and it lit right up. I turned it off and waited a couple of minutes and tried again. It lit right up. I did this three time and had no problems.

Thanks for all the help. I'll give it a real workout at the end of December when we go camping.

Yes, gas is much better, faster, and heating the water.
