23 Rb roof walkability

Will be picking up our new Passport Elite 23RB on Tues. Already planning installation of vent covers, but have a question about walkability of 23RB roof. Have read of issues on other lite weight trailers and possible work around methods. Any advice or suggestions ? Thanks in advance for the help.

The 23RB does not have a walkable roof.

When I get up on mine, I use two pieces of 2" thick pink foam that I cut from a 8' length. I use the pieces to spread my weight and by moving one in front of the other, I can move about the roof.

Just because a roof isn't walkable in the traditional sense doesn't mean that you cant get up on the roof and do maintenance or install a vent cover.

My Cougar 26RBI does not have a walkable roof but even at 230lbs I get up to do maintenance and install add-ons. This past week I just installed a EasyStart in my AC and last year installed both a vent cover and MaxxAir fan.

All you need to do is have something to spread the load. I use Foam board insulation cut in 2' squares to navigate to where I need to be on the roof. Depending on your weight and the thickness of the board you buy you may have to duct tape two pieces together to make it thicker. I use 1-1/2" boards so I tape two together to make 3" though I have used only one piece without issue. Plywood works fine as well but duct tape the edges to prevent it from damaging your rubber roof....the foam board insulation is both lighter and easier to manage moving around on the roof without fear of damage.

I spread a couple of old bedsheets out on my roof and laid down a 2' x 4' piece of 7/16" plywood, being very careful not to slide it across the roof, to install my max air vents last weeknd. Just picked it up and reloicated it to each of the vents. It was very solid and I never felt like I ws stressing the roof. Did not get any flexing or anything. I did try to make sure it was laid out across several roof trusses.

This is exactly what I do and it works well. I cut the foam board into (2) 4x2 sections and (1) 4x4 section. Gives me some versatility when walking around. I duct-taped over the cut edges as polystryene foam tends to break apart easily.

You will find you can install the rear bathroom vent cover without getting on the roof at all. It is right at the back edge of the trailer.

I found out from the factory that my 2016 Passport UL Express 199ML also has a "non-walkable" roof (bought new this year from RV Wholesalers, Lakeview, OH, who told me at the PDI "Oh, we walk on them!"), and I need to get on the roof for maintenance, etc. Where can I get those "foam boards?" Home Depot? What's the brand name?

Home Depot, Lowes, almost any home improvement store. No specific brand

They will also cut them to the sizes you want. I suggest cutting the 2x8 pc into two 2x4 or one 2x4 and two 2x2.

Thanks, "Bill-e" and "Slow" for the hints on the foam boards. They must be pretty rigid to spread a grown man's weight over the roof structure. I guess this gives me more incentive to loose some more weight (down to 220 from 226 over the past month, and immediate goal is 200!). Don't want to fall thru the Passport roof!

Since you don't have a walkable roof and therefore no built in ladder, I can recommend this ladder from Amazon. Throw it in the bed of your truck, you never know when you may need to get on the roof or manually retract that awning

That is an interesting ladder. I was looking at this from Northern Tool to do maintenance while the rig is in the storage building, but yours would be better for travel. https://tinyurl.com/y72aj9xw

My Laredo 23rb has a "non walkable" roof. I've been on it several times to install several items, and have not done anything special. No leaks, no problems.

Couldn't do that on a '15 Cougar Xlite unless you only stand on the rafters..
