2014 326SRX Evaluation

We won't have ours for a few more months and were wondering if anyone who owns one would relate their experiences so far.

One thing I'm wondering about is if the stock tailgate can remain on the truck. Pictures show that it might be a bit tight to hitch it to the truck with the tailgate down. Rather not replace the stock tailgate with a notched, 5'er tailgate if not necessary.

Thanks in advance.

While it isn't necessary to replace the stock tailgate and replace it with one designed for hauling a 5th wheel, it isn't quite as convenient as having a "notched" tailgate. This type of tailgate makes it easier to both hitch and unhitch.

True, but I have a tonneau that I would like to keep in order to provide a bit more security for whatever I might carry in the bed when the trailer isn't attached. Having a tailgate that allows a view to my belongings would defeat the process.

I'd like to know if the stock tailgate won't lower when hitching to the 326SRX before I travel out of state with the tailgate to get the trailer.

Even if the tailgate would hit the trailer after backing under the pin, you can always back under until the pinbox clears the tailgate, then stop, raise the tailgate and then back into the hitch.

There was a review of a new model fifth wheel (not a Keystone) in Trailer Life last month that had a "short bedroom platform" and they were unable to hitch the trailer without doing the above procedure. Their comments were pretty negative about how the pinbox was constructed in relation to the relative closeness of the front wall on the trailer.

There are pinbox extensions available that would resolve the problem if you do encounter it, but I've not heard of anyone having issues hitching with the tail gate down on the 326.

A viable option with the stock tailgate.

I'm beginning to recall from my motorhome days the mantra: adapt or accessorize.

If you opt to stay with the stock tailgate don't forget to put it down when you go to pull out from under your 5'er. Don't ask me how I know.
