The units that are installed are junk. Mine was less than a year old when it started to flake out. Called the company that produces them and they are pretty much expecting everyone to call, they have a prorated sheet they use to sell a new one. Not cheap.

Just cut the wires, capped them off and bought a 10 year unit. Lithium Ion sealed unit with a digital display. Just mounted it over the hole left by the hardwired unit.

The nice thing is that if you want, you now have easily accessible 12V leads to hook up a phone charger etc.

The one in my last RV went bad too, but it was 5 years old so I guess that is better than most. Best part about that one I that it only went off at night which led me to believe that something was actually wrong with the RV, until I threw it outside and it continued to chirp. If I could have learned to sleep through it I could have used it as an alarm clock, just get up when it stopped making noise

A CO detector has an expiration date that should be checked. I prefer the battery driven ones and they can be bought pretty cheap at the big box stores.

I've read that RV and marine detectors are certified for use in unconditioned spaces, whereas home units are not.

This is one area where I won't skimp, so I replaced my expired one with one rated for RV use.

rv type

I was surprised the rv one does have a much larger temperature range. I never thought of that.

But having one with a display is very important. without they do not go into alarm till 100ppm. Any reading over zero is some thing to look in to.

Thanks.

I'm on the fence, if they can't make an RV specific one that lasts more than a year, how can I trust it even if it "Looks" like it's working?

At least with a home model, with digital display, I can see what's happening, even before the alarm goes off. And from a manufacturer i've heard of.

Mine just went - little over a year or so old. Sigh. I haven't decided what to replace it with, so will be watching this thread....

My original lasted until it expired, so I guess I was lucky.

I couldn't decide either, so I went with both.

I replaced the original with the same RV certified model as well as adding two non-RV detectors that have more features.
