Cougar xlite 5er

I read your replies and apologize for not adding more information. Here goes.

Tow vehicle is a 2010 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab, 6.2 gas with 3:72 rear, HD towing package of 10,600 lbs.

Fifth wheeler is a Cougar Xlite, 29RBS, dry weight of 7,590 lbs, Hitch weight of 1,405 lbs. These are only what is listed from the brochure and not actual rv.

On our last vacation I saw several of these Xlite's being pulled by same vehicle as mine. The only information I got from one of the drivers is that he has no problems towing or going up hills and loosing power. (PA) That was all I got. Looking for anyone out there that has an xlite 5th wheel and towing with a 1/2 ton truck.

I would like to know how truck handles, any towing concerns, power up hills, etc.

I know what the dealer and brochures say but would like to hear from real owners.

That's an extremely broad (open-ended) request!

Obviously 'everything' depends on the specific configuration & capacities of the truck being used as
a tow vehicle, AND the specs/model of the 5th wheel being considered.

Too many variables involved, and without more specific info from you, members can only offer broad-ranged
generalized statements which won't really answer your questions.

Succinctly said and I totally agree!!! There are so many different trailers and even more options for a half ton truck. Nobody could address a pin point answer to "cougars and half ton towing" without the OP telling us what truck (with information on any optional towing packages he has) and what trailer he is considering

28SGS 2013 Cougar XLite Fiver

We are pulling with a 2500HD 4X4 EX CAB 6.0 Gas with4:10 gears
Travel ready truck weight (2 adults and a 20 lb pup) 6780 cat weight
2013 Cougar XLite 28SGS

Hooked up cat weight Combined Weight 15500lbs---8660lbs Truck (includes the 1880 pin weight) (540lbs left to GVW of the truck) Trailer axles had 6840 lbs.

The gross weight of the trailer would be 1880 + 6840=8720 total trailer which is below the GVW of the trailer.

9 mpg the best we can get so far, I have 6.5mpg in the mountains. Does good in the mountains. 150 book weight different between 28 and 29\

26sab towed with 1/2 tundra

I have been pulling a 26sab (6800 lbs) for a few months with a toyota 5.7 liter tundra with the towing package and have not had a problem. It does take a bit more power to climb. I have routinely been averaging 12 mpg.
I never use 6th gear (overdrive) but just 5th gear.
I previously had a ford 150 but it broke down (plug coils) and the spark plugs broke when I tried to get them out. I'lll never get a ford again.

This is our setup. It hauls the 5er around very nice...get a good hitch, hook up and go for it.

2012 29 res

I pull a 2012 RES with a 2007 Toyota Tundra 5.7L with no problem - there aren't that many big hills in Florida so I can't help with the losing power issue, but I average 11 to 14 mpg on relatively flat highways.

I pull a 2012 cougar xlite 26sab with a dodge 1500 4wd hemi. No problem but then there are not real bad hills in Saskatchewan. Sometimes wind seems to be more of a problem than the hills.

Very new @ this--but here goes, I pull a 2011 Cougar XLite 26SAB with a 2010 F150, 5.4 2wheel drive--crew cab (long bed). Full towing pkg. Favorite camping is in PA and I have to pull through the PA mountains. Not big mind you, & I will pull a few more RPM's. I average about 15 mpg. By the looks of the posts, this is pretty good!! I won't complain again.

2013 Cougar 28SGS

We pull a Cougar XLite 28SGS with a 2012 Dodge 2500 Diesel. In 2000 mi towing from TN thru New England, I am getting 11.5 mpg. In June, towing to NE with the 3500 (4.10 Rear)I got 14.3 mpg. I had hoped to do better with the auto trans 2500 with the 3.73 Rear, but i guess I have to put on many thousand more miles. The trailer does not have the fancy suspension of the MS or the Air Ride hitch, but it tows smoother than all the prior trailers. Possibly due to the softer ride of the 2500 compared to the 3500.
We love the trailer in spite of the tradeoffs compared to the MS.
