At least it wasn't a donut tire you had to mount. That is about the best that can be said about this.

It sounded like most were talking about TT rvs but after reading all of this I will be looking at my spare to see what it is then getting an extra set of whatever I need to make sure I can get the spare mounted on the 5ver.

You know, there is nothing in the RV trailer building regulations that require them to provide any sort of spare wheel/tire assembly. When they do, it doesn’t have to be just like the tires that came on the ground as original equipment. The RV trailer builder can call any spare they provided with the vehicle as a tire for temporary use only. That’s why they can provide a bias ply tire on the least expensive wheel and still be in compliance with the regulations.
Looking for a new trailer, make sure you add a spare tire inspection to your PDI list. If you want a full size spare that is just like the other tires than you had better ask for it and get it down on paper.
A buyer will get more protection from NHTSA with a non pneumatic spare tire/wheel assembly than any other kind.

This morning I took the time and trouble to see for myself. I removed the aluminium wheel and put the spare steel wheel on and the capped lug nuts tighten up the wheel as normal. I did put 6 open lug nuts that also fit, into the trailer tool box just to have with me instead of sitting in a box in the garage. This post has me thinking maybe the wheel suds had been replaced with ones longer then they should have been and that caused the problem?

I tried my steel wheel spare today, while doing some other work. The lugs do bottom out with the stock capped lugs. I now have 5 open '1/2" 20 open standard' (right off the box) from O'Reilly's in a bag in the junk drawer.

FYI just got off the phone with the dealer. He's going to order me an aluminum matching rim and have keystone pay for it. He agrees that I should not have separate rims/lug nuts, etc.

Good for you!! Hard to imagine a dealer would do that...maybe I should contact mine as I have Alum mags also and a white spoke steel rim for a spare!
