Lippert/Dexter Axles

I just picked up the TH for some service work at the local Keystone Dealer. We started shooting the breeze, when we get on the subject of axle bearings. He told me that a lot of the axles come with sealed bearings, but they are seeing a high failure rate. Because they do not want the same occurrence both manufactures are going with non sealed style bearings. Here the kicker, the manufacturers say the axles need to be replaced. Has anyone heard this

Nope, can't say that I have. Both my recent trailers from 2 different manufacturers have had ezlube axles. It would not make sense and would not be possible to lube a sealed bearing or waste an ezlube axle on a sealed bearing. Can't say I have seen any sealed bearings on the newer trailers.

The "Nev'r Lube" (sealed bearing) axle has a closer bearing spacing than the serviceable axle and the hubs are not interchangeable. You DO have to swap the entire axle. This close bearing spacing is its Achilles heel, more so than the lack of greasability. The EZ-Lube axle is a conventional axle with a grease fitting.

How can you tell which setup you have without taking things apart? I have a 2015 Springdale with the correct track system and steel wheels. There was no information about the axles in the information that came with the RV.

If you crawl under your RV, on the axle beams, somewhere close to the center of the trailer, you'll find two ID plates, one on each axle. Those plates will give you the model of the axle, the weight capacity and the serial number. Then go to the Dexter site and download the appropriate user manual for that axle series.

I'd write down the information you find on the axle beams and store it with your RV information packet, for future reference. Sometimes the tags remain legible a couple of years later, but that doesn't assure that the information will be readable the next time you need it.

I went under mine a pulled one of the tags off. Taped it to a piece of printer paper. Called Dexter and gave them the serial number. They e-mailed the build sheet of the axle. Everything you ever would need to know is on the sheet. Excellent customer service. I used it to cross reference the seals and bearings to get a extra set to keep with the RV. Preloaded with with grease and used a vacuum clear to package them for storage.

Good idea. I saw a small plastic cap on the center piece and removed it. Below that was the rubber plus and underneath was the grease fitting. I have the EZ lube version on mine. I will write down all the information on the axles and call Dexter to get the spare parts list. Thanks everyone.

I didn't go to the extent that Carwheel did, however I did use the iphone to take three pictures of the labels and stored them with other pertinent info on our computer. However, I am going to go the one step further and buy a spare set of bearings and a seal to travel with. Great idea, Carwheel!

I just followed carwheel's advice too.. I don't like buying trailers and then having to chase bearings at some time in the future.
