Gray Tank Leak

2013 327 Cougar RES : Pulled gray tank and found a small crack at the top under the lip. Repaired with epoxy. Will see how long it last, not really wanting to buy a new tank. First time inside under belly, “Polar Package” is a joke!! Insulation is foil backed and maybe 1/2” thick. Not too satisfied with Keystone at this point

Did you add any additional insulation while you were in there?

1. Welcome to the forum.

2. Why are you not happy with Keystone? Just curious of your reasoning.

3. Welcome again.

I still have the underbelly open and will add insulation before closing up. I believe the “Polar Package” logo on the side of these campers is deceiving. It’s just a selling point that would lead a buyer to believe the underbelly is fully insulated. I do have a question about the gray tank. Is it supposed to have a vent? My tank has only the drain pipe from the bathroom in the top and the drain valve on the side.

Whatever insulation you decide to add to the belly area should not be able to absorb water in case you develop a leak, otherwise you will end up with a very heavy and soggy mess to deal with. Just remember, heat rises and cold air drops, so if you can keep the area well sealed up, you likely will not need to add any extra insulation. The Arctic Package doesn't just apply to the belly, but also to the walls and ceiling areas as well.

Thanks for the underbelly insulation advice. I plan on using closed cell foam sheets. I’m in Louisiana so it’s probably overkilll. I am still wondering if the gray tank is vented. There is only one inlet and one outlet on the tank

I can't believe there's no vent but if you pulled the tank I guess you would have seen it. What about up on the roof, how many vent pipes are there?

Cant speak to the vent. However I had a crack in a previous class a grey tank and I used JB plastic weld. I had it for six years with no problems after that. It is also paintable if you were so inclined to have it match the rest of the tank it is grey in color.

If you look under a sink you will see a one way valve vent. RV manufacturers often do it that way.

Those are air admittance valves, not vents. They don't vent air out of the tank, they draw air into the drain line to keep it from sucking the trap out when you drain the sink.
