Best trip adviser

Hi there, i am a newbee, what do you use to plan a trip and take advice on potential pitfalls such as retricted bridge or tunnel with LPG or limited height clearance, etc. Please advise.

There are apps available, but don't recall names off hand.
We used the Motor Carriers Atlas purchased at a truck stop, it list all concerns in the front by state & all the roads highlighted are good for truck travel. Not sure what setup you have (post in your signature for future questions), but if the road is highlighted you're good to go. If you find yourself on a road & don't see a truck going either direction all day you may want to stop & check the map.

I plan my trips at https://tripmaker.randmcnally.com/ and then download your my Good Sam Rand McNally GPS. You specify vehicle type when you create your account.

Warned me about tunnels with propane restriction.

We just use the Good Sam Atlas that has the RV safe roads highlighted in orange. Beyond that, we just pick a few major attractions each season and travel from one to the other. Often we find interesting places to stop along the way.

A warning: It is becoming very difficult to get camp sites during school holiday period unless you book at least a couple weeks in advance. Weekends during that period are even worse as the weekend warriors come out in droves and completely swamp the campgrounds. And then there are the public holidays!

Even with some app or Atlas, I would measure the height of my RV to know EXACTLY how tall the thing is and heed height notices on underpasses and bridges just to be on the safe side. What is posted on these physical structures is likely to be correct rather than trust a 3rd party source. Most campers don't have anything to worry about but there are low under passes out there.

That could be the bridge out side Gatlinburg Tennessee clearly marked and a nice detour right at the bridge thank goodness.

best thing is just stay aware and know your height. I have never needed anything special to know that a bridge is too low.

Most of our driving is on roads/highways that are 'truck' traveled. It is intercity routes that we've had some scares.

enjoy rving.

Agreed. I use the RV Trip Wizard for trip planning, but don’t go anywhere without the Rand McNally Motor Carrier’s Road Atlas in the back seat. Just received my 2020 atlas today. The atlas shows truck routes, low clearance routes and route restrictions that help me decide if the route my GPS is providing is a reasonably safe route for my 13’6” Ht 5er. Good for US, Canada and Mexico. Cyber Monday price was $30 with free shipping ($40 reg). Cheap insurance.

RV Trip Wizard is really good for planning routes, RV stops, fuel stops based on your settings for time or mileage, avoid tolls, bridge limitations and more all based on your preferences. Gives you a good detailed set of steps for everything.

Only place you really have to watch is in town. Out on the open road not so much. I have never seen any propane restrictions in my travels. I have been a lot of places. I just use my nav in the truck.

I got suckered this last trip when Google took me onto a thruway in NY state. The sign said something like "Private cars only, no commercial trucks." I'm neither, so what do I do? I figured from the language that the restriction was regulatory (like "no trucks in left lane"), not physical, so we proceeded. Big mistake, low bridges.

But I learned my lesson that day that when I use a road trip planner to pre-load Google Maps, and Google Maps tells you halfway through the trip that it "found a faster route," always click the button that says HELL NO!

Get an RV GPS and enter your max height etc. Forget about LPG, you don't carry any. Garmin 780 or 785 will route you around any low bridges. If in doubt, follow the 18 wheelers, they are taller than you are.

I don’t think any one worries about lpg anymore. I let it all all the time and don’t think I even remember a sign about it and go through mobile a lot. Be curious what others say about tunnels and gas

From the city of Baltimore:

"Regulations govern the transportation of certain hazardous materials across our toll facilities. Under these regulations, vehicles carrying bottled propane gas in excess of 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895). The Francis Scott Key Bridge (I-695) is a convenient alternative route for crossing Baltimore's harbor."

Would have tried to go that way until Rand McNally RV GPS told me I couldn't. Wonder what they do if you try to go through?
