Cougar 310RLS and 2017 F250

I am looking at new 5th wheels (first timer) and the wife really like this model. I have the 2017 F250 CCSWB 4X4 Diesel. Payload is low but I have the 6340lb rear axle. Recently weighed the truck with both of us and 3/4 tank of gas 1/2 tank of DEF. Front axle 4820 and rear at 3420. I know with the one I am looking at I will be under RAWR but just over GCVW. Just looking for some input if I should really consider something lighter.

Indicated hitch weight is 2055 on the 310RLS.
Ford says that the 2017 F-250, short bed, single rear wheel, crew cab (dunno 4x2 or 4x4) is between 1836-2249 in terms of capacity. I'd call that "at" the limit empty with an RV empty pin at 2055, but in the case of a 4x4, it's actually over... Weight distribution isn't pound for pound when you load a 5th wheel, but you can expect some of it to distribute to the pin.

I don't know that you're going to get a much lighter 5th wheel. That leaves one remaining option, but you're not going to like it.

I like that you're not over on the axle rating, but you are putting a lot on two rear tires.

Honestly, people do this all the time. It potentially a liability issue (although I have yet to see an insurance company deny a claim based on it). People DO tow with overloaded rigs in the 3/4 ton class (you may get that feedback here) but it's certainly not recommended.

Moving to a lighter 5th wheel is one answer, but you won't get one that's very much under 2k in pin weight, IMHO. The other answer involves Ford.

I see these Cougars advertised as "half ton series" in 2018... Maybe that's due to new pickups, but it sounds like quite a stretch...

Pin weight on that model is probably going to end up being 2400-2700lbs. I have a Dodge Ram 2500 and currently over payload by about 500-600lbs but under Rear axle rating by 800lbs and under CGWR about 1600-1700lbs. My dry weight pin weight was listed at 1465lbs but when I went on the scales, it’s roughly 2000lbs and I have very minimum storage up front. I personally would be looking at dry pin weight between 1300-1700lbs but I’m sure your truck could probably handled the 310rls. My 5.7 has no issues with my 5er but i don’t travel through mountains.

Actually I had a typo. I would be roughly 3k under GCVR but just over the 10k# truck number. I have the 22.5k GCWR

yes install airbags. Did them on my 2500, didn’t have a lot of squat in the rear but I am able to level truck and will help with wear and tear over the years on rear suspension

Well new member stating he is a first timer, now is that towing or towing a 5er?
I won't recommend towing over GVWR, but many do it without negative results, myself included.
Our Copper Canyon is about 100# lighter than your Cougar, carry/tow with a 2001 Ram 2500 with the Camper package. If your F250 has this package I would put off the air bags until you tow the 5er home, you could find you don't need them. We tow without bags and the ride is fine.

It is YOUR decision to exceed your GVWR. There could be legal issues if you get weighed, or in an accident.
