Remember that the purpose of the strut is to "assist" when you open and then hold it open....barely. Ours is fairly heavy to lift but then stays in place; we have however added a much heavier mattress - but they still work.
As John pointed out, if you get them too strong a number of things can go wrong; the increased force they will exert on the framing can break it if it is not stout enough; you can get them so strong that the bed will want to open "for you"....not good.
If you can't raise the bed due to the weight and want to use the under bed space you may have no choice but to upgrade the struts. Do the existing ones hold the bed up? If so I would go to the next size first. It may be a trial and error effort but I wouldn't want my bed to act like a jack in the box either - particularly if I was in it!
Make SURE the framing is strong enough. Also, as you increase the size of the strut at some point the strut itself, and the mounting hardware, are going to increase in size as well. You need to make sure that the framing is not only strong enough to handle the increased pressure, but large enough to accommodate and increase in size of the hardware.
Good luck, let us know.....and watch out for that "jack in the box"!
