E-PASS Xtra use with Fifth Wheel
I have been searching this forum to get info on the E-PASS Xtra as it relates to hauling the camper and cannot find the info.....so :
We will be starting our retirement journeys from PA to FL with east coast stops along the way. With and without the camper.
How does the toll charge work work and can it be used with the fifth wheel at all?
By the way after searching the web it seems the "E-PASS Xtra" pass is used in more east and mid country states than others, any better ones?
Thanks

There should be an ez-pass site in PA. Here in Maryland my ez pass transponders are connected to my trailers by registration of the tag numbers. I just added them via the web site and have had no issues transiting any ez pass toll lane.

So you keep the transponder in the TV and the toll booths see or don't see the camper and charge you accordingly?

The transponder stays in the truck and the road sensors figure out that you're pulling a trailer and not being tailgated. I've had some states (Delaware several years ago) where the toll booth didn't register the trailer and it photographed the trailer tag. They still charged the proper toll but it took a couple of days to post according to the letter the sent me. I should think they have that corrected by now.

I still keep my NJ EZ-Pass even though I live in Fla for a few years now. I use it with rental cars when we visit and for airport parking when in NJ. It always found the trailer behind me and charged the correct rate when solo. Good throughout the NE for $1 a month service fee + tolls. NOT GOOD for Florida tolls. They are SUN PASS or billed by tag readers.
If I remember correctly there is a difference between an automobile and a pickup truck account but not sure.

No difference in MD unless you have more than 2 axles on the vehicle but that's toll specific not EZPass controlled. EZ Pass just pays the going toll rate.

All I did with my PA EZPass is update the vehicle and trailer info on the web page then drive. I was billed for the truck and trailer accordingly. My last trip in 2018 on toll roads, PA, OH, IL, IN, were all billed and covered. I do not have the Xtra package. Billed according to axles - 4. Not cheap, but convenient.

Thanks to all for the info, Think I will get the E-PASS Xtra as it includes all EZ-Pass and Florida. Has a movable transponder so I can use it in my car also.
One time $18.50 + tax
Also need at least $10.00 for pre-paying tolls tolls
No monthly fee
No contract

I just did a little research and found that E-Pass is something new. (Be among the first to have E-PASS Xtra – a toll transponder that works on toll roads and bridges in 18 states from Florida to Maine and west to Illinois.) Some searches show it is only available to central Florida residents other sites say anyone can get the window chip for free and a portable transponder for $18.50. None of the sites seem to agree on what and where is covered. Florida's Sun pass recently had a major screw-up so I would wait until all the bugs get ironed out before putting my eggs in that basket.

Plan on keeping more in your account as some tolls in the NE are over $16. with a trailer. My EZ-PASS recharges at $25.

A lot of tolls with a 2 axle trailer aren't 2 X the cost but end up being much more. They typically list it as cost for 2 axle vehicles and then so much per axle after that. You can log on to most state's web sites for the toll rates in a particular state.

If you get your EZpass from North Carolina, it includes the Peach Pass and Sun Pass. Only state I know of that does... And I live in Ohio.

Thanks!
I compared the NC EZpass to the Florida E-PASS Xtra and both cover the same states.
The NC EZPASS also has ability to add on the I-77 HOV status (with 3 or more riders) and a 35% reduction on NC tolls.

E-pass
The e-pass works lol the sun-pass. It counts axles as you go through. So you are charged per axle. Gets expensive but by well worth the time saved on some roads

Ez pass will typically recognize your RV with the transponder in the tow vehicle. Aside from the various axle rates there are also two height rates. My trailer doesn’t trigger the higher height rate but a fifth wheel will. Some states also offer a home state discount. I am in NH and my Ezpass is NH so for NH tolls, I get a 30% discount

Don’t get the E-pass xtra confused with the ez-pass. The e-pass xtra is issued by the Orlando expressway athourity and is totally compatible with most of the Florida expressway athourities and EZ-pass in all 18 states.
SunPass is still not comparable with ez-pass
All these transponders read the same and will read your 5th wheel as a trailer. It also reads a dingy as a trailer for a motor home.

On our toll road here near Denver CO I have the 5th wheel license listed along with my truck.
But as stated elsewhere on this page you get charged one fee for the first 2 axels and then additional for additional axel.
It is still better than sitting on I-25 going though Denver.
