Truck No Start
just got home from a trip of over 4000 miles. parked the truck in the driveway and next morning started it up to move it. It started up as all ways then loped a few times and died. It would not start back up, acted like the starter was dragging or batteries were dead. I checked the batteries , checked the oil to see if fuel had drained into oil, checked coolant for possible leakage into cylinders, every thing good. I had a tow truck take it to the Ford dealer. Forst thing they said is dropped a injector and is hydro locked. great news I love spending money on this diesel. They called to day and said they found the problem, a/c compressor was locked up and chocked the motor down and would not let it turn over fast enough to start. Not cheap but so much better than motor problem. never seen one do that . it is a 2003 F450 with a 6.0 now you know what I mean about spending money on the motor.

Yeah, what Traveller said. After only fifteen years an AC compressor gives up the ghost. That's the direct problem of this particular diesel engine.....really?

Yea! Really! Dropping injectors (multiple times), blown head gaskets (multiple times, even after the ARP bolt up grade), among a variety of other problems, so not at all surprising a locked up ac compressor could stop it also. My son had the Excursion with that giant waste of iron under the hood, so I do have 1st hand experience with POS engine.

That's NOT what the OP said happened. He said that it ran, towed his trailer home, he parked it without any issues. The next morning, it wouldn't start so he had it towed to Ford for service. They found that the A/C compressor was locked and the STARTER wouldn't develop enough RPM to turn the engine fast enough to start. That's not a 6.0 issue, that's a common problem with all engines. When an accessory is "locked up" any starter (even on a GM diesel) will have difficulty turning the internal components. That's "sort of" like blaming the motor because the battery is dead. It's easy to see the prejudice, but geesh, it's tough to blame the headliner because the rear bumper is rusted......

YUP!! Trick with working on a 6.0 is to have a person that KNOWS that engine. This isn't the thread to discuss the 6.0 reliability but I can say I know lots of people that have one with no issues.

The point being it's a 6.0 that wouldn't start, not too out of the ordinary.

FWIW, the 6.0 isn’t known for dropping injectors.

Good to know it's NOT the Ford 6.0 this time !!! But, I'd have to ask just how strong is that serpentine belt if it can hold back the starter motor because of a bad air conditioner compressor? I'd sure be changing out that belt at the same time as replacing the A/C compressor.

I posted this not to bash the 6.0 but to let every one know that if in a similar situation something else to check before calling it quits. Does the 6.0 have a bad rep yes. Is it the best diesel around ,no. But lets face it I hear Duramax injector problems, I hear of Cummins melting pistons because of high exhaust temps. none are perfect, none are exempt from problems. A 15 year old truck pulling a 18,000 pound 5th wheel across the USA is doing good no mater what brand. Accessories go bad no matter what brand, Gas or diesel.

Yup. Diagnosing a no start can get complicated. Glad it turned out to be a relatively small problem. My ‘94 in sig did the same thing with a 12,000 pound fiver...my hats off to you, may you have many more miles of trouble free towing.

FYI, on my f350, one morning the engine would not turn over, it ran fine the day before. I started at the batteries and found 1 cell in 1 battery was bad. The rest were all good. Before that day I thought the starter would at least get the engine going if only 1 cell was, as I recall in the 10 volt range.

Wasn't claiming all Ford's, just the 6.0!
Drove a Ford everyday for 30+ years at work. And I too will walk away shaking my head, NO to ever owning one.

He said it did start then loped a few times then died and wouldn't restart. In my experience a seized a/c pump would cause belt to scream and smoke but shouldn't drag a running engine down to the point where it would stall? And if it can. Well I don't see how you could haul anything with that motor. My two cents from experience.

Every one has an opinion and they are welcome to them. Now as I was behind the steering wheel when this happened I can testify it was the truth. As far as not being able to haul any thing I have been towing a 2010 Fuzion FZ 383 Touring edition ll Toy hauler for years with this truck. That is 40 foot of 5th wheel with 3 axles and a loaded weight with my side by side in the back of over 18,000 pounds. From south Texas to Quartzite AZ to San Diego CA then on down to Guerreo Negro Mexico back to San Filepe Mexico on to Yuma AZ then back to San Antonio TX that's since Jan 15th. not bad for a truck that can't tow any thing. I am glad that Ford 6.0 is the only diesel that has A/C compressor problems. I guess Ford just has a better belt tensioner than other brands. this is the reason I have been cautious about posting any thing on these sites. I have experience in the field of repairing equipment I was a industrial truck mechanic for 35 years, sorry I posted any thing so good night and good by.

C'mon George, this is all in fun for most of us. I'll agree that one of the bowtie guys probably had his wife run off with a Ford mechanic and leave the kids behind, but that is to be expected. Remember we usually just come here for a little info and see who might get a little riled. You've been on this forum for a long time and have seen a lot of good people come and go. Don't sweat the petty stuff.....and so on.
