Atwood furnace blows fuses
For some strange reason my Atwood furnace likes to blow 15 amp fuses somewhere between 1:30 AM and 4:00 AM. I know the timing due to disrupted sleep patterns. The furnace appears to run fine any other time of day. It starts up and stops as it should but blows the 15 amp fuse on the power converter system (what I call the fuse panel) every night at about the same time. This has happened at 2 seperate locations do it can’t be related to one shore power pedestal.

Begs the question, how does the furnace know what time it is? My guess would be that it's running longer at the coldest time of night. The blower motor would be the largest amperage draw so I'd start by checking vents for obstructions free airflow.

If you're dry camping and relying on the battery power, possibly the voltage drop (increased amp draw) is causing it? If you're plugged into shore power, that probably would not be a contributing factor.

Don't know what kind of rig you have but if you have a water softener it may regenerate at that time. Also if a residential fridge it may self defrost/cool at that time. Just a few thoughts.

My rv water softener is regenerated by me with a box of table salt, no 12 volt or 110 volt wires connected. As for the residential fridge it's ONLY 110 volt & the furnace is 12 volt.
I'd start by checking the furnace manual or call the furnace manufacturer& inquire if the 15 amp fuse is what it should be or did someone at the dealer or factory replace it with a lower amp fuse.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll check the vents for obstructions. Not dry camping, two different parks, different pedestals. Good question: how does the furnace know the time. Went to auto dealer and bought quality fuses, hopefully that’s the answer.

Yes I understand just thought the OP may have an inverter and batteries get run down hence lower voltage higher amp draw. Just a WAG I am far from being an electrician.
The wrong fuse is a good suggestion.

I use this on occasion to test circuits. It will take up to 30A, but I wouldn’t suggest a 30A fuse. Maybe a 20A WHILE YOUR WATCHING. May give some insight.

Yea! I don't have a residential fridge so I don't think about having the inverter, but if boondocking could be a possibility.
Also knowing how they build these, is there other 12 volt items connected to the same fuse, should be dedicated to only the furnace, stranger things have happened.

It would surprise you (probably not) what you can find on a single 15A circuit.

We just received a letter from Keystone for malfunctioning Atwood furnaces in keystone fifth wheels & travel trailers. It says
"It has been determined that certain Atwood furnace models may have wiring that can come in contact with the exhaust vent tube causing the furnace to shut down in a safe manner."
Keystone has notified their dealers and recommends bringing it in to have a fiberglass sleeve fitted around the exhaust tube.
I took a pic of the letter but can't figure out how to post a picture on this site.

Well, blew 2 more fuses last night. Put a new fuse in this morning and the furnace has cycled throughout the morning several times without blowing a fuse. There has got to be something drawing power from that circuit only at night? Very strange.

Are you sure the fuses are really blown and the furnace isn't just locked down due to failure to light? I believe changing fuse would cause it to "reset" too so would seem like a fuse had blown. Or perhaps you saw the indicator saying it's blown then ignore my thoughts. Lastly if it really did blow fuse is there a chance there is a power dip during night (that is causing a high current condition due to low voltage ?) .

No, fuse is blown evidenced by panel red light and center burnt fuse. I also wonder about nightly power dip as it seems to run fine during daylight hours. This is the second consequtive park where I’ve had this problem. First park the furnace ran ok through 1st half of the winter season, 2nd half not so much.

Nothing else running to my knowledge. Had another repaiman tell me the problem was most likely the furnace motor.

I just read this thread yesterday, and later yesterday went to go get the mail, and got the same letter for our Keystone Passport GT 2670BH... Haven't had any issues with the furnace so far....

This could be related...I received a service advisory notice the other day from Keystone "certain Atwood furnace models may have wiring come in contact with the exhaust vent tube causing the furnace to shut down in a safe manner. Remedy is to remove exhaust tube on exterior and install a fiberglass sleeve around the exhaust tube and reinstall". I need to contact my dealer and have this done at no cost. My RV is the Cougar 22RBS.
