6r100 vs 6r140

Anyone know when Ford started using the 6r100 in the f250 6.2 gasser?
I know the current f350 6.2 still uses the heavier duty 6r140.
Some conflicting info out there.
Thanks for any and all input.

In 2017 Ford introduced the "new" SuperDuty. That is the first year of the "light duty transmission" (6r100) in the F250 with the 6.2L gas engine. The F250 diesel models still use the "HD transmission" (6r140). The F250/6.2L is the only model with the 6r100 transmission. All of the F350's (gas or diesel) use the HD 6r140 transmission. All 2016 and previous (back to 2011) SuperDuty models, whether gas or diesel, used the 6r140 transmission.

Thanks John. Doing a bit more reading it seems the 6r100 is a 6r80 (Mustang) with a beefed up gearset. Looking to upgrade to a F250 so will go with a prior to 2017 model.

There were a lot of improvements in the 2017 trucks including the all aluminum body, larger rear seat area, electronics and ergonomics, etc. But like you, I'm a little concerned with the "light duty transmission"... My thinking is, if it was good enough to tow a 12K trailer in a F250, why didn't they use it in the F350 too? Since they didn't, it looks like it was a way to reduce the overall F250 weight a little and add it to payload to remain competitive with the other manufacturers.

You'll "lose" some of the extras by going to a "pre '17" truck. An alternative is to include F350's in your search. They are supposedly the same truck as the F250 except for the GVW and now, the transmission. Maybe there's a tax advantage with the F250 in Canada? Here, licensing and registration is the same, insurance is a bit cheaper on the F350 (fewer claims paid I suppose). Had I been able to find a F350 for close to the price I paid for my F250, I'd have bought it, since I had to remodel the garage door to get either of them into the garage. (Truck was too tall to fit under the header beam).

Hey John. Tax advantage and Canada DO NOT go together! But I will look for a F350 gasser also. We pay a premium for diesel fuel here in the valley where I live. Lots of logging trucks here.

The 6R140 has the capability to use a PTO if needed the 6R100 does not.
