Forward Adjusting Brakes

The new Keystone TT we get will have FWD adjusting brakes. Never had adjusting brakes on a trailer, guess manufacturers are trying to come out of the dark ages with brakes, but still way behind the times. I have read, and talked to people with them and about 50/50 On likes/dislikes, most dislikes were do to brakes wearing out prematurely, sometime drums got messed up due to the fwd adjusting brakes. When I say prematurely, they were worn out in 1 to 2 years. And that might be mormal for fwd adjusting brakes, i am not sure, What are your thoughts on this and if you have them have you had any issues with them and do you inspect them more to ensure the brakes are not wearing faster than normal, or is it business as usual, Safe Travels, Hootie

Grand designs has used them for at least the past 3 years that I know of. We have several customers that travel A LOT, and I haven’t seen any worn out yet. I will be changing mine to self adjusting one of these days.

I believe they will be forward adjusting only. To my knowledge nobody makes forward AND reverse auto adjusting brakes. Can you post a link?

I think mine has both forward and rearward adjusting brakes. I think it depends on which direction I turn the star wheel?.......... Sorry, I just couldn't resist. Not making fun, I just had a vision of that wheel being turned backward and forward.

Our 2012 Montana came with the Dexter forward only self adjusting brakes, and they only adjust when the adjuster mechanism moves far enough to turn the wheel one notch, and the brakes last quite a while. It's possible on regular non-auto adjusting brakes that they last longer because they aren't adjusted when needed and they aren't working as well as they should be. Not having to worry about getting brakes adjusted every 3,000 miles is a big plus, so enjoy the self adjusting brakes.

Yep, knew about Grand Design, I have one, selling it to get the TT, that is one place I read on the forum of brakes wearing faster, someone posted there. I like the idea of not having to adjust, I will be keeping an eye on them till I am comfortable with them. Thanks for the info

Bought a new Alpine that came with self adjusting brakes. Pulled the hubs , replaced one rear seal , lubricated bearings and checked the brakes before our first trip. Never felt that the brakes were quite right and had them checked twice by the dealer. After about 6000 miles we returned home and discovered that three of four brakes were totally destroyed. I have no idea if it had to do with the self adjusters but I have owned other trailers without self adjusting brakes and had no issues.
I now have disc brakes and am very pleased with their performance..

In the context of "forward and backward" adjusting brakes, I viewed clicking the wheel down (toward me) as "forward" and pushing it up (away from me) as "backward" - in case anyone else wanted to see if they have forward and backward adjusting brakes....

On mine when the wheel turns the brakes change and turn too. On one side their forward adjusting and half a turn later their rearward adjusting. Then half a turn again, their forward adjusting......I think I'll just call mine oscillating adjusting.

I think there is some confusion between "forward self adjusting" and standard manual adjust brakes.

Not to start an argument, but every RV I’ve looked at has Lippert forward adjusting brakes, on dexter and alko axles. Maybe horse/stock trailers are different.
https://www.lci1.com/self-adjusting-brakes

Clearly states adjustment is only forward stopping. I will have to call tech support at LCI for clarification.

I had never thought about this fwd and reversing self adjusting brakes, again I never had them. But after a quick search, found that supposedly the Dexter self adjusting brakes per what I read on
E-Trailer site says they adjust both ways. It would make sense, the brake does not know if you are going fwd or reverse, since it actuates the same way. I could not find anything on Lippert, but it was a quick search, but if pictures of assemblies are correct the cable is run differently for the self adjusting part of assemblies. And again it might not be nothing. Going to check more into this. Thanks for bringing this up.

I do see how mine maybe forward - backward as I'm usually lying with head forward feet aft adjusting the rear wheels and reversed working on the front!
