Lake Geneva WI to Michigan City IN

I am looking for advice for getting from Lake Geneva WI to Michigan City, IN and avoiding Chicago. I have looked at routes and have come up with this but looking input from either locals or people who have traveled thru there.

From Lake Geneva, travel on RT-47 South to around Morris, IL
Pick up I-80 East to I-294 to I-94 to Michigan City.

I would welcome thoughts/alternatives/advice, etc.

Thank you in advance.

You will be better off just taking the tri-state tollway around Chicago.
The section of I80 at the bottom of the lake is as bad or worse than I-294.

Just pick off commuter hours to do it, go mid day, or before 6am, or after 7Pm

What is the highway number of the tri-state tollway?

I live outside of Sharon WI. Just take 14 south out of Walworth, at Harvard take 23 down to Marengo, jump on 90 east to 294 south to 80/94 and then 94 to Michigan City. Have an Ipass and leave at 3 in the morning, you won't have any problems. We do this numerous times a year.

I live in McHenry IL and make the trip to the south side of Chicago often. I don't blame you for wanting to avoid the construction and congestion on all of the city's so called expressways.

Let me start with saying there is no good way around the city. Routes 14 and 47 are two lanes with a lot of stop and go traffic because of signals and trucks. Consider going a little further west to I-39 to I-80 and then onto I-94 into Indiana. I-39 is about 35 miles west of Morris, IL but at least you'll be moving. I-80 will be a little slow when you get south of the city just before entering Indiana as there are a lot of trucks heading east.

Whichever route you choose be careful and have a safe trip.
