Re: Hitch Recommendations?

If I were getting a do over, I would consider Andersen.
If you go with the Curt and want to pull it out with your ceiling joists, brace all that up good, it's heavy. I use a Harbor Freight engine puller. It isn't quite long enough to reach over the center of the hitch so I have to horse the hitch around a bit. I need to get a longer boom.

Will the Anderson system work with an 07 Chevy Duramax Short Bed or are they mainly for long Bed trucks? They look real interesting. If it works with my truck I'd go that route for sure.

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and have been reading up on this thread. I've just recently purchased a 2017 Cougar Xlite 5th wheel with a rating of 10,000 lbs and a tongue weight of 1,390 lbs. I'm pulling it with a 2015 Chevy Duramax 2500HD crew cab 4x4 standard bed like the OP. I upgraded to the 5th wheel from a 21FT hybrid TT. This is my first 5th wheel, and so far it seems to pull quite well and more comfortable than the TT I had. I crunched the numbers on the Cougar and found to be within the weight limits of my truck (I hope) This was one of the reasons why I went with the Xlite Cougar due to less weight. The hitch I went with was the b & w companion (non-slider). I was going to get the slider, but changed my mind when I saw how bulky and heavy it is, and the fact I would need two more hands to take it in and out. I have the pivot arms positioned to the furthest position away from the cab of truck. That and the cap of the cougar having that max turn shape allows more than enough clearance between the truck cab or bed rails. I could probably position the pivot arms closer to the cab for better quality ride since the weight would be more towards the area between the cab and rear axle. Hope this helps.

No expert on 5th wheel hitches but I think your kingpin should be centered on the rear diff,

It is right over the axle. I had read some where that it's better to be in that area between the cab and rear axle so that some of the weight is distributed to the front as well? Again, I'm new to the 5th wheel scene so any input would help if that's not the case. If not, I can just leave it positioned right where it is over the axle.

There is absolutely no problem towing with the B&W arms facing back and the kingpin a couple inches behind the centerline of the rear axle. I've done it for 10 years with two 5ers and the B&W. W-a-a-a-y back when, did it with another brand hitch and 5er. Total miles towed are probably well in excess of 75,000 with nary a problem.

If you read the instructions for virtually all sliding hitches, they clearly say not to tow with the hitch in the maneuvering (rear position).

My hitch is not a slider. It's a stationary companion and the tongue rests above the axle not behind it.

I have the Andersen and love it. Last truck was a short bed and it worked great.

I have to differ with what Dave says. I don't doubt what is said about him towing all those miles, but the mounting of his hitch is not the accepted standard of the industry. Hitches are mounted between two points: So the hitch pin is directly above the rear axle line and three inches in front of that line.

Works great with my similar truck.

Hitch Recommendations

I expect that most of us love the hitch that we have been using and that's fine. I've used two hitches and I absolutely adore my B&W Companion 5th wheel hitch. I was unimpressed with the Reese Pro Series hitch that was tossed in as part of the price of my first 5th Wheel camper. After seeing the first B&W Companion, I HATED My Reese Pro Series! Tripping over it got old fast.
The B&W Companion serves double duty as a Gooseneck or a 5th Wheel, your choice.
The Companion is a two piece removable in-bed system. Good thing, as the B&W base is about all any man 50 and up would want to lift.

You now have the cleanest pickup bed of all of 5th Wheelers when the 5th wheel top and the base bottom are removed. No clumsy rails to trip or stumble over.
Think of it as a bumper hitch draw bar except it's mounted to the frame over the differential and it points upward.

My B&W has towed two different 39' foot big rig 5th wheelers effortlessly, both weighing over 11,000 pounds dry. One pulled almost 8,000 feet at Raton Pass, NM and it withstood my stomping the brake just fine as the rig was going too fast for the upcoming downhill winding curve. I enjoyed the extra feeling of confidence this hitch gave me.
I simply adore my B&W Companion Hitch. I would not hesitate to buy another if I needed to.
