Dirty Awning

Can someone please tell me what is the easiest way to clean the under side of my awning..it is dirty and moldy.. I have tried spraying cleaner and scrubbing and got most of the cleaner on me. The only way I can see is take the awning off and lay it out and scrub it. Any ideas on this.. Has to be an easy way to clean this.

Spread a mixture of soap & bleach on the upper side, then roll the awning up and let soak. Unroll & rinse.

Hey JSMITH948,

That's probably the best idea I've heard in a long time! What is the formula/ratio? I don't want to bleach the fabric, just clean it.

I use 10 percent bleach solution and add a squirt of dawn into a garden sprayer, soak both sides good, roll up for about 20 min. Unroll and rinse real good. Great results every time.

I've had great luck with Awsome cleaner. It is cheap and available at Dollar Tree (and places like that). I mixed it stronger than the directions and used a long-handled brush. Got me clean too!

I use a 50/50 solution of 30 second cleaner and water with a 1 gallon sprayer. Roll up the awning and wait a few minutes then unroll the awning and rinse with cold water. DON'T wear a black shirt because you'll have a new tie dye t-shirt to wear camping!

Thanks for your service. I use the same method as Therink. 10% bleach and some dawn detergent.

Wife uses a Swiffer mop to clean inside floors; I have found with its long handle it makes an ideal cleaner for the underside and top of the awning. After using a couple of times the black marks have quite coming back so it is an easy job now to just do a clean up of the dirt. Also Dollar Tree sells refills of 8 for $1.00 making it also cheap. Use it on the top as well, can reach most of the awning and it sure does take off a lot of dirt.

+1 on this- also look for a mold inhibitor. this will not be bleach. As someone who lived through Hurricane Sandy, we all learned bleach does not kill mold. It will remove the surface mold but not kill it.

Applying a mold inhibitor after washing stop it from growing back.

Just another note to the OP. Don't know what your usual routine is, but, we ALWAYS extend the awning after a rain to allow the awning to dry. Leaving it rolled up after rain has infiltrated will lead to mold/mildew. We run it out and let it dry..EVERY TIME. JMHO

Just a quick note, the clorox clean up stuff works well, but if your going to do the spray/scrub method using it, I suggest a mask and eye protection. Especially if its windy.

Magic eraser also works well to get the white part white again. Letting it dry after cleaning or it gets wet seems to help the most, though sometimes its near impossible to achieve. Seems everytime I go to clean it, its windy, or wants to rain etc.

Also, at least with mine, if you drive through a rain storm, water will work its way in there and ruin a just done cleaning job.

I second or third the Clorox Clean-Up. But instead of spraying it directly on the awning, I spray it on a damp sponge mop and spread it with that. Then a minute or two later rinse the awning with a hose.

I have always used the awning cleaner you can buy at WalMart.

That and an extended handle wash "broom" You will get soaked doing the underside if you aren't quick at it but it works great. Let is dry out real good then roll it up and you are good to go.
