Question on wheel bearings and seals

I now this probably should go under maintenance issues but I need an answer today before I go home.
I am going to replace wheel bearings and seals this Saturday. I have an RV tech friend who is going to help me. HE told me to get ethe bearings and seals and that I should ask for the stuff that fits a dexter 12" axle. BUT looking online that is not specific enough. He said go to tractor Supply or Northern Tool. and get all for the 4 to be replaced. We talked repacking and he said if you have them out WHY not replace them since my camper is a 2011. Better safe than sorry.
Any body KNOW what I should be asking for? at the stores??
thanks for the help in advance,
randy

Only the seals are a replace only. I ran the same bearings on my previous fiver from 1997 until 2012 when I sold it.

Best bet at this point is just wait until you pull one and run to the auto parts for replacements.
Assuming it is a Dexter axle you might look in here:
http://dexteraxle.com/bearings

I called Dexter with my axle numbers, off the axle paper tag, and they gave me bearing numbers.

edit: Be careful buying the seals. There was a part change at some point.

If the labels are still on the axles, you can get the info there. Dexter will give you the right part number based on the axle.

Wanted to carry a spare inner/outer bearing and seal. Jotted the bearing numbers down when I was repacking the bearings. Found the parts at "Redneck Trailer". Don't know if you have one near you. They carry everything from brake/backing plate assemblies to tail light bulbs. Not affiliated in any way - just a good source for parts.

I have some interesting info about bearings and parts I discovered when converting to electric hydraulic disk brakes on 5200 pound axles.

Your chart is right on.
Here is the info I got from Dexter for the 6K axle:
Part #'s for bearings
15123 Outer bearing 1.25"ID is for use with 5200-7000lb. trailer axle
25580 Inner Bearing 1.75"ID is for use with 5200-7000lb trailer axles
10-36 oil/grease seals
These numbers will pull much info up on the interweb.
I am ordering from E-Trailer for the parts. They have each hub kit for $17.90 comes with bearings, races and seals. Best deal and will get 2-3 day shipping so that I can start this next week with the weather coming around 70 each day.
NOBODY local had everything I needed. So my plans to work on camper tomorrow fell through.
Thanks for all the heads up
randy

I'M WITH CHUCKSTER. REPLACE THE SEALS EVERYTIME AND CLEAN AND REPACK CHECK FOR DAMAGE AFTER YOU CLEAN THEM BUT A WELL GREASED BEARING SHOULD LAST FAR LONGER THAN FIVE YEARS. HOW OFTER HAVE YOU REPLACED THE WHEEL BEARINGS ON YOUR CAR?( UNLESS IT'S A VOLVO X/C90) THEN YOU HAVE DONE THE REARS OFTEN.

No one in East Tennessee has the Dexter 10-36 seals or replacements except for the main Napa store and the seals were $51.99 EACH! I am going to order them online I guess. I wanted to repack mine while getting the Sailuns mounted but it just wasn't in the cards. The drum I took off to get the number for the seal had grease all over the brake shoes. So much for EZ lube axles. That's ridiculous. I was very careful about spinning the tire while greasing and only doing a little at a time as to not pump it past the seals. Oh well.

You can get the seals for a few dollars each. They are cheap. I got mine from a local Agri-Supply for maybe $2.99 each. Cheap. Also if you have never replaced the seals or inspected the brakes the seals may have been damaged during the build of your unit.

See how my seals were beat up and deformed with grease on the brakes on a new unit here:

I bought 4 seals from my local dealer that he said were the right ones. While I was waiting for my tires to get mounted, I searched and found they were not. I took them back and he basically accused me of not knowing what I was talking about. He said he has been doing this a long time and those are the correct seals. I told him his seals have an ID of 2.125" and mine (Dexter 010-036-00) have an ID of 2.250". He asked if I used a micrometer to determine that! I said no, I simply looked up the specs online (something I asked him to do this morning). Finally after he started looking them up, he realized they have changed recently. I called 6+ dealers including Camping World and also Napa, Advance auto parts, autozone, oreilys, and northern tool. No one has them on hand except for the high dollar ones at Napa (I have no idea why they are so expensive there. Most places said they could get them Monday, I was just trying to complete this job this weekend.

The brakes have never worked like I thought they should. I now know, at least for the right front wheel, why. I bought some high temp grease from O-reilys in both the tube and can so I can flush out the old grease and have just one kind in there. I probably will never use the grease fittings again. I will repack them in a few years or so.

O'reillys has that seal in their "house" brand, where I got mine.
Dang if I can remember their brand, It's in a gray box. Slightly different construction...has a steel plate on the bearing side instead of being open like my factory OEM seals.
And...Amazon has Timken bearings at a decent price.

Oreilys had them. I was there twice yesterday. The guy at the counter didn't want to spend any time trying to cross reference the seal. I finally found a National seal number (442109) that had the same dimensions. My local store had 4 in stock. They were $10.99 each and didn't have a spring on the backside of the seal, but they should be ok anyway. The only perfectly dry brake drum was rear right. The front right was soaked with grease and the 2 on the left side had a little trace of grease. I adjusted the brakes a little tighter too, so hopefully they will work better now. Thanks for the help Gearhead!

I wish I could have gotten the part numbers for you, but my spare seal and bearings are in the 5th. And where is the 5th you say?....It's back at the dealer getting the sliding glass shower doors repaired....3rd time. One of these days I'll tear into them and learn how to fix them, maybe.
