I thought the "new" keys with the RFID-like chip in them (an actual key versus the wireless fob things used in Prius and such) were required for the vehicle to recognize the key and could not be hardwired. Am I incorrect in this assumption?

I lock the vehicles, but if broken into I thought it would only be smash and grab, versus drive off with the vehicle.
