The battery disconnect switch has to be on for the battery to be connected to the converter. You would have to look at your converter to see what kind it is to determine what it does as far as charging goes. Look at your power panel it should have a model number and manufacturer and then you can look it up to see what it does.

For instance mine shown in the picture is a WFCO 8955 good for 55 amps and it has a three stage charger in it so it will correctly charge your battery.
