The tanks are vented via a pipe, called a vent stack, to a covered opening (vent) on the roof. The vent saved you from over pressurizing you tank, and I would guess everything is okay. The vent is really there to allow air in and fumes out as the water/waste levels in the tanks change, but it doubled as a pressure relief in your case.
