Check out this website and look at the amperage ratings for 6/4......and you will see that it is 55 amps if there are two current carrying conductors. Now look at the very bottom of the list table and you'll see the verbiage about the conductor that carries unbalanced current not considered to be on of the conductors.....it's footnote one.
