Resealing seams

I know when working with regular caulk or silicone sealant you must remove old stuff first as the new will not stick to the old. Is that needed when using the dicor lap sealant on your RV seams or is just cleaning the old sealant really well enough to place new sealant over? Please advise. Thank you.
