I did the pump anti-freeze through the unit method last winter and DID open the washer valves into a bucket till red ran out. Then poured some of that back down the drain there as there is a P-trap before it gets to the tank. I think PEX lines are pretty forgiving in the cold but the valves may not be, better to be safe
