When I traded my last trailer in I too had a tailgate oops hole in it. I made sure the dealer saw it to be fair with them and they weren't worried about it, when I saw what they did I was thinking now why didn't I come up with that?They had a piece of thin aluminum diamond plate cut 4" wide and simply screwed it to baggage door front going all the way across.
