No, I think you misunderstood my comment, didn't mean actually holding spring tension but holding back on the roller so it doesn't slam against the RV. They said if my electric on my power awning quit working, I could install the straps and let it roll up like the manual style pull out awnings. Just not sure how that would work, thought maybe the OP had the same setup.
