I like that Hepvo valve. Anyone here actual using...

I like that Hepvo valve. Anyone here actual using one? If the Hepvo valve eliminates the cheater vent, why would taping it off be bad?

What does this thingy do?

It looks like a vent and its under my counter attached to the sink drain line. Its pretty stinky under there at the moment. Do these parts wear out? Can i replace it? What would happen if i taped it...
