Nobody has mentioned the easiest fix. If the check valve is being held open by a small piece of debris, simply turning off the city water and using the pump can dislodge it.

The inverter wouldn't be the problem, the converter is what would increase your 120v load if it's trying to charge your batteries. Make sure the breaker for it is turned off before the AC starts.
