A very long time ago, we used to go camping with "Gus" and his family. Gus had a great sense of humour and was, and still is, a really creative and funny guy.

Much of our earlier camping was spent in our BC Provincial Parks which have no water, electrical or sewer hookups - except perhaps the campground Host. Along with all of the usual camping "stuff" that people bring along, Gus sometimes brought along one of his unique campground "inventions", developed for the sole purpose of creating a stir amongst the campers in the park.

His creation consisted of a 3 ft long 4x4 post (sharpened on one end) and attached to the other end was an outdoor electrical box resembling the usual ones found in sites with hookups and a section of 1" pipe with a water tap. So, on one side of the post, he had an electrical outlet and on the other, a water outlet. To make things look official, he painted a "campsite number" on the post. He then proceeded to pound the post into the ground - just the right distance from his camper.

To almost complete the picture, he plugged in an old extension cord and hooked up a hose - both of which ran to his camper. Last of all, he then pulled up a lawn chair, plunked it down, sat with book in hand and waited.

He didn't have to wait long before those folks out for their daily walk around the campsite looked, paused and pointed towards the post as they walked by his site. You could hear them whispering amongst themselves as they gathered in small groups and beckoned others to join them. They all looked very perturbed - puzzled as to why this particular site had hookups and the rest of the campground had none.

Finally, a spokesperson emerged from the group, the curiousity too much to contain, approached Gus who then explained to him about his fake hookup creation. Everyone had a good laugh. Soon afterwards, another couple or group walked by and more chuckles were heard. It made for great entertainment and everyone who stopped by left with a smile.

Gus doesn't go camping anymore as his legs don't work too well but his sense of humour works just fine. "bouncey:
