Bumper caps

Anybody come up with a cool way to keep those rubber caps that go on the rear bumper? Trying to come up with a way that looks good and won't rust out right away.:rolleyes:

They make some that you have to put two small screws though and then the door to it is hinged and snaps shut I bought them this spring from my dealer for about 15 bucks and it's problem solved.

I just drilled a hole all the way thru the bumper and rubber end cap. I then insert a long stainless bolt thru top to bottom. Works great. My end caps have a center hole I can easily look thru to line up screw with bottom hole when inserting.

Similar idea, I drilled a hole in the cap through the bumper and then dropped a small steel tent peg through the holes....

I never use the bumper caps. Long ago I stopped storing the sewer hose in the bumper for two reasons. First, I switched to the 90 degree dump station fitting on the far end of the hose and that won't go into a 4" bumper.

But more importantly, no amount of maintenance and painting will stop the inside of the bumper from rusting. Rust is... well, run your hand over it - it feels and acts just like sandpaper. After I replaced the umpty-umpth leaky hose, I decided to stop abusing it and see if I could get at least one full season out of it. So I started storing the sewer hose in a Rubbermaid type tote box. I made some other changes in how I use the sewer hose, and now I am on my fourth season with the same hose.

I use the bumper to store 4"x4" cribbing now. The pieces are about 11" long each, and can be used in a variety of ways to level up a trailer on an uneven site. I drilled a hole top and bottom at each end of the bumper and use a long 1/4-20 eyebolt and wingnut to keep the cribbing in the bumper. The open ends also help keep the wood dry.

Okay I brought the lockable bumper caps. The first trip out I get to the camp site and the wife tells me the sewer hose is hanging out of the bumper. :confused: I turn the corner and yep not only is the hose sticking out and dragging the ground the lockable bumper cap is gone. Plan 2 is in the process!!!!!! Pretty sure I am going with the long screw through the stock rubber cap. ;)

Haven't lost one yet, but saw a post in another thread about not really a great idea to store the sewer hose in a rusty metal bumper. Looking at getting a length of ABS drain pipe with screw on end caps, problem solved nice smooth no rust storage for the hose with a secure closure!

If you don't have the 90 degree fittings on the end of your stinky slinky, it should fit nicely in 4" thin wall PVC drain pipe. There are lots of fittings including caps and threaded caps available for it. Plumbing department of Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

If your fittings on your sewer hose are too large for 4" thin wall, you may need to go to 5" or 6" PVC - I have not seen that in thin wall so it will be pretty heavy. But it too is readily available.

Black RTV sealant on those pesky rubber caps and they will never go anywhere. "bouncey: A 5" square vinyl fence post make a great storage area for hoses and fittings and is much lighter (and cheaper ) than 6" PVC pipe. JM2¢, Hank

This is what I decided to do I figured I could kill two birds with one stone so to speak. 1 quit losing caps and add one 1 place to have a tie down hook. I installed eye bolts cut them off and installed clips to hold everything togather.

Did the same with the tent peg, but added a light chain, because I always seem to lose/misplace things ;)

We just recently purchased our 2011 Springdale and the PO had used
blue painters tape to secure the end caps. An hour of work with a
razer blade and a can of Goof Off and it was all cleaned up.

I thought about the long SS bolt through both ends of the caps, but
decided to try just drilling a hole in the top and using a small pit pin
to secure the cap, if that does not work, then the long bolt will be
used.

I also can not store my hose in the 4" hole, my hose end parts are too
big to fit.

I will store my hose in a rubbermaid box with lid.

I do like the idea of the 5" PVC tube with screw on end caps, but it
would need to be mounted on top of the 4" bumper and might conflict
with the spare tire?

First outing with my new Keystone 318SAB I lost one of my bumper caps. When the guy behind me told me about it after we pulled into the RV park I thought he was talking about the hose......fortunately, NOT. I replaced both of them with the screw on type......but I really am considering Steve C's post - rust and all...and that would make an excellent storage place for long handles like broom handles, window squegee handles, etc......that won't cause things to rust! I'll just have to figure out a way to keep them from shifting ends and pushing the cap open.........something to do while I'm camping!

I drilled holes like the others but I just used a clothes hander and bent the end over into a "J" and push it into the two holes. been there ten years, never lost another cap and never had an issue with rust

I drilled a hole and placed a tie wrap (wire tie) through it. This prevents it from coming off and also acts as a hinge so I can access the inside of the bumper.

X2 on the locking bumper plugs, I bought these and they are still on tight after every journey. :thumbsup:

I just drilled a hole in the top thru the bumper and rubber end cap. I then insert a galvanized nail.

The locking bumper caps are made for 4" inside diameter bumpers and my Cougar has 4" OD bumpers. :(
So I drilled holes and used a screw to hold in place. But I like the idea of a long bolt and no end caps instead or I might look into the 5" fence post solution.
