You are placing it just below the grill and above the flame?

Yes, where are you placing the tile? Do you put it under your baking pan? Last weekend I decided to use our oven for the first time (this is our 3rd year with a trailer and we never once used the oven!) I found these nifty disposable baking dishes and thought how cool it would be to have brownies while camping. It said they could be used up to 450 degrees so I figured no problem not even giving thought to there being a flame. Well the middle of the pan that was right above the flame completely melted! My husband mentioned putting some sort of plate in there to even out the heat. Never really gave though to terracotta!

glad to see my wife isn't the only one baking while camping. a few times she ran out of time during the week and had to have something ready by sunday night when we got home. i did take notice that things tended to not be even (but i dare not say anything) i bet i could do this and she wouldn't even know. heck she need's me to get the thing started. thanks for the advice.

Great Idea, my wife loves to bake apple crisp when we go camping and hunting it always turns out great and on the cold nights it even better. Can't wait to try this in our unit. The wife does us glass I think pirex (sp?) when she uses the oven camping turns out great.

Remember to add a few minutes to the cooking time if you place a 12"x12" ceramic tile in the oven.

I've placed my tiles directly on the heat distribution grate in the oven. I used 4 pcs and I think they are 6" square. This leaves a few spaces so that the grate is not completely blocked. On top of this my wife uses stoneware for baking for more even cooking. She has stoneware of every shape and size.

I put "Oven Tiles" on my to-do list and actually had that list with me this weekend at HD and Lowe's. I looked at the tiles, but neither had any terra cotta tiles. But something did occur to me while in the "tile department"!

Scott, and others, are using the correct tile - Pizza Stone or Tile! Other tiles that are used for flooring/walls/etc. should probably not be used even if they are porcelain. In the glaze or the components of the tile, there might be lead, chromium, or other materials used that are allowed in construction materials, but which might not be a good idea to use in ovens containing food products!

I did find some "Personalized Pizza Tiles" that are 6"x6" at BB&B and Amazon that appear to be a much better choice than the Sand Rose porcelain I originally picked out!

We bought a piece of flat stoneware from Pampered Chef.. if fits perfectly over the metal plate just over the burner. My wife has used the oven in the camper for anything we would use it home for. She has made some real nice cakes in our camper oven. I measured that oven 3 times to get the right sized stoneware. She has different sizes in the house and we use the pizza stone a lot. I have been baking my bread/biscuits in the stoneware with small sides. Like a baking dish? we also have a stoneware cooking dish with a lid. Works in microwave or oven. All this talk and typing is making me hungry for some camping style food..
I hope I can make it 6 more weeks until I get to camp..

I tried the cheap route with a $1.30 saltillo floor tile from Home Depot. Tested the oven at 350 and the tile cracked. I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised since the tile wasn’t fired – just sun-dried. So I ordered a pizza stone (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005HU6IVI) from Amazon. I’m just hoping it’s not *really* 12 feet by 15 feet. The floor of my oven isn’t so flat and I’m worried about it cracking due to stress, so I’m tempted to put it on the oven rack at first and then set it on the oven floor when I have enough pre-trip time to order a replacement should this one break.

We bought a pizza stone at Target and it has worked great. We bought the largest one that would fit in the oven, and even though it is round instead of square and doesn't fit like a custom made job; it works just the same.

Going camping this weekend. So maybe will bake something again.

Works great...designed to take the heat and distribute it evenly. Same principle as that Chevy Chase movie where he visits his nutty cousin living in the desert of Arizona in the summer and he throws steaks on a hot boulder to cook :bdance:

BTW I am in AZ and it's going to be 78-80 and SUN for the next 2 weeks! Ohhh, I checked my AC, we are good to go! :cool3:

Hmmm CD, "Lucky you"

Our 10 day forcast calls for a high of 34 (today) and the low is 14... After today, the high for the next 10 days is 31. Looks like we've finally got winter <sigh> They predict the biggest snowfall of the season later this week.... So...I guess the trailer will stay inside for another few weeks at least... Last year it was the end of April before we took the cover off, and even then, we wound up with about 6" on the roof before the first trip. :( MAYBE we'll be able to head out fishing with the boat and trailer by Memorial Day... That's opening weekend for bass. In years past, we've had to chip ice off the boat ramp to get the boat in the water for opening day, I hope this year is different

Enjoy your 55 :p

YEAH!!! YEAH!!! YEAH!!! Enjoy that 81 today... In July when you're inside and running both A/C's to stay cool, around here, it'll be 81 on the hot days and 75 most days, so while you're inside, we'll be outside with "our sunscreen" and water :bdance:

I do wish we could have a "weekend" away from the white though... Would be sooooooo nice if it would all melt for a couple of days, get up to 80, and then maybe cool down a bit.... Hmmmm maybe Florida next Feb??? Gotta see about that

Well, Mr. Michigan, FYI, we are only wintering out here in the warm Arizona sun.:cool3:

We spend our spring, summer and fall in the  Georgia mountains!

Check out our permanent home base: www.rranchga.com

We have enjoyed Michigan visits in past summers and it's a wonderful place to VISIT and LEAVE

BTW, golfed GREAT today....more next week...

Gosh, love this rough outdoor camping!

JRTJH and Outbackmel..........
I am wondering if I should don my referee's zebra shirt in an effort to keep you two from coming to blows and to keep this thread from becoming buried in a Michigan snow drift. On one hand, we have a member sitting in the sun drinking a cold beer and another member who wishes he was in the sun drinking a cold beer. What to do?
What about the burnt cake in the oven? Have both of you forgotten about it sitting there?
I am thinking that a cake in the oven has taken a back seat to a cold one in the hand.
Time to close this thread? Time to call "time" and have both of you go to the "time out room"?

JRTJH

Nah, Festus. I'm not "angry" or even about to be, and I don't think OBM is either. I will say that I "have a little green" starting to grow around the edges, (couldn't be envy ???). We could have gone south (or west) as well, but chose to stay "frozen" and play with the winter toys, which may not have been the best choice given the limited snowfall and "screwy" temperatures we've had. It would be very nice to be in the sun, with a sand wedge in hand (my most used club) waiting for the DW to finish baking that cake in the RV oven. <G>

Speaking of burned cake bottoms, any time you have an open flame on a sheet of metal 2" away from the bottom of a cake pan, it's going to be hotter there than on the top of the cake (indirect heat) so a pizza stone (that doesn't block the ventilation holes along the sides and back of the oven floor) could help, but I don't think any oven that small is going to bake like a 5 cu ft oven at home. We've found that the countertop convection oven at home has the same sort of "hot spot" problem as the RV oven. I think it's more size related than performance related. Pizza stone probably is the only "work around" While travelling, DON'T leave it on the porcelian oven bottom, it'll scratch and chip it while in motion. That'll make it near impossible to keep the oven floor clean if you spill or if baking food drips on the oven floor.

I know this thread is old but non the less valuable and some with new rigs may want to take a read. When I saw we had an oven in the new rig I was really happy cause I love my biscuits and gravy in the morning. However I was really disappointed when after trying several combos the biscuits were always pretty much burned on the bottom but this may be the fix I was looking for. I do have a question however. For those that are using the pizza stone are you baking directly on it or in a pan? Also where do you have the oven rack, top or bottom?

We will bake directly on the stone and if we need to bake something that will require a dish we have a stone dish that we use. As for the rack I just raised it up one notch above the lowest setting. That still leaves just enough room to put the stone baking dish in but yet isn't sitting right down on the flame. I also find that if you cook with a stone you should pull it out before it is completely cooked and let it sit on the stone a few more minutes before serving. The stone stays hot enough to finish cooking without having to stay in the over.

My pizza stone sits on the metal below the grill. My rack is on the bottom setting. It’s been working fine for me.

I've had two other RV's with ovens and they worked great but I can't seem to get this thing to bake worth a darn.

there are two common oven sizes. 17" and 21". I suspect from the description you have the 17".

Having used both, the 17" is MUCH MUCH MUCH more difficult of an oven too use successfully. the top rack is way to close to the top of the oven for anything other than cookies and maybe muffins. the bottom rack is way to close to the burner, and isn't much use by itself.

with the 17" we found using a pizza stone or airbake cookie sheet with the top rack was ok, but then it limits what you can bake. Even with a pizza stone or airbake pan, the bottom shelf was hit and miss.

With the 21" on the second (middle) position we can bake cookies, muffins etc w/o a pizza stone or airbake pan, but it does work better with one. And even on the middle position you can bake cakes etc.

also the 21" has more space below the burner for broiling and I think it also helps keep the shelf above the burner from getting so hot and burning stuff.

the 17" seems to be common in travel trailers, the 21" in 5th wheels and motor homes.

I went to look at the pizza stones, since I had never heard of them. Which one is the best one to get. I googled it and the prices go from 9.00 to 45.00ish prices. Can you educate me (I really suck in this domestic stuff).

This is exactly why I'm going to get the 12"X12+ terracotta as the OP suggested. I'm not as paranoid as some about lead and the like and since I won't be cooking on it, it's cheap, available, and seems to work I'm going to give it a whirl.

I am so glad I remembered reading this thread several months ago. I actually joined the forum before we picked up our new "baby"!

Well, after 2 1/2 months of playing with it in our yard...we are actually taking a trip next week. "bouncey: I am trying to come up with a menu...along with the spaghetti, or course we have to have garlic bread. So, I guess I am gonna head over to Target and pick up a pizza stone, can't have burn't bread. I look forward to baking in the new oven.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input and ideas, not only on this thread but the whole forum. DH and I both look at it almost daily, and have come across some great ideas and reminders of things that should be done (and some not so great ideas). Please keep them coming!!

Have a great day everyone!!

I went and bought the one at Target. It fits inside just perfect. The only thing was first use, I heard a pop, thought it was my cheap pan, but after removing the pan I saw the pizza stone had cracked into three pieces. LOL . I pushed it together and still used it. It worked fine. I forgot to store it when we left the campground got home and was cleaning up and discovered it had broke a little more. I still plan to use it I just wish I could remember to store for travel:banghead: LOL

'm using unglazed tile. But here's a hint, I stuffed the rack with two different pans, one with meat, one baking brownies. Part of the brownie pan was directly over the "holes" in the oven floor (pan was on rack). That part burned on the bottom.
