View Full Version : What's behind the wall in the bath

I have a 2009 Passport 245RB. The bathroom is very small without any provisions for hanging towels or a shelf for placing clean clothes, toiletries, etc. The rear wall is blank between the shower and the side wall. I would like to add a shelf to that wall (which would be above the toilet). However, I don't know what may be in the way behind the wall. I don't want to screw into any wiring. I would like any suggestions on how to install a shelf and if there is a risk of hitting wiring.

Chessie,
We have to same unit as you and I hung a towel rack on that wall you were talking about..I went to Home Depot and got the smallest wall anchors they had..I think they were 1/8" I hang 3 bath towels washcloths and a hand towel..It holds up just fine..I also attached a toilet paper holder to the bathroom door..I used the same anchors...If you drill a hole, make sure you just barely go through the panel...Hope that helps..

Tim,

Thanks for your input, but I'm not sure what you meant about 1/8" anchors. Are they an 1/8" long?

I was surprised that there was essentially nothing in the bath to hang anything on. As you mention, even had to add a toilet paper holder. I added an over the door towel hanger I purchased at the RV dealer. I works fine. I added a pressure rod under the mirror above the vanity. To keep the rod from getting wet, I inserted the rod into a length of clear plastic tubing. That rod allows us to hang a hand towel above the sink. I was at a loss as to where to place the toilet paper holder. Finally put it to the right of the toilet just above the floor. That seems to be out of the way and reachable.

You might be surprised by finding no TP dispenser or towel hanger in the bathroom but it is not an uncommon practice by RV manufacturers. When I asked the dealer why they were not included he said that "customers usually end up taking them out and replacing them with ones more to their taste". Sure.
I think the 1/8 in anchor that was mentioned in the above post refers to the diameter of the anchor itself - not its length. They come, I believe, in various lengths so for the wall that you are talking about, you don't need a very long one.
I have drilled small holes in the walls that you mentioned, mounted TP dispenser and towel bar and everything worked out ok. Didn't hit anything that I am aware of.

Thanks for info on the 1/8" anchor. I found them at ACE HW. They also had a "Pop-Toggle (small) for 1/8" - 1/4" thick wall panel. Holds up to 40 lbs. I may try that for a shelf bracket.
