This is a post about what should be an obvious topic but after seeing pictures where someone butchered some screws trying to remove them and then was upset with Keystone for using crummy hardware, I thought it perhaps was not so obvious.

The first tool EVERYONE needs to buy for their campers is a #2 Robertson screwdriver. This screwdriver has a square tip and is needed to remove almost every screw in your Keystone. You can get a Phillips to work (sometimes) but you run the risk of messing up the head of the screw.

I not only have the screwdriver but a #2 Robertson bit for my drill so I can use that to remove and install these types of screws.

Please... get this tool!

Indeed, the square drive bits are a necessity.

While a philips may work on a square drive screw, they aren't intended to. I admit, I've used a philips when that was all I had in my tool box, but it buggered up the screw head. None of the square drive screws on my Outback have the slots for Philips screwdriver.

Both phillips and robertson will work on mine but as others have said you've just about got to have have a square bit. It pays to have the right tool for the job!

I never thought twice about the Robertson screw and screwdrivers as they have been found in every Canadian's workshop and toolbox for decades. Many, but not all, of our screws are Robertson --- some are Phillips. All of our construction-type screws are Robertson. Almost forgot that this screw was "invented" back in the early 1900's by- none other than Percy Robertson, a Canadian - no relation to Mr. Phillips or Mr. Flathead. He was, as many looked upon him, as being quite "square".

That was the first piece of advise from the dealer last year when we bought our 1st trailer. I ended up picking up a small complete tool kit (just about everything I could ever need) and it included the #2 bit.
