Yellowstone National Park West Entrance

Anyone take a trailer from Yellowstone Park to West Yellowstone, Montana using the west entrance. Trying to find out if the road out is trailer friendly.

We were there in 2015. We entered the park from Cody using the East entrance., stayed at Fishing Bridge RV park and left the park using the west entrance into West Yellowstone and took US20 south toward Twin Falls, ID. The road is "typical" inside Yellowstone NP, crowded, somewhat narrow and winding and there is almost always a traffic jam anytime wild animals are sighted near the highway. So, plan accordingly. This is true for any road inside the park, so there's not much you can do about those conditions. Once you exit the park in West Yellowstone, you'll drive through town, there's a "sneak upon you" left turn to stay on US20, so keep your eyes on the road, otherwise, it's a RV friendly leg of the trip. There's no reason to be concerned with "bad or congested roads" on that part of the trip any more than on any other part. I think you'll enjoy your time there. We thought it was an "easy tow" from Fishing Bridge to Craters of the Moon NP and then on to Twin Falls.

We visit YNP twice a year. No troubles with a fifth wheel or motor home coming out the west exit. We live in southern Idaho and travel the roads JRTJH mentioned several times. If you don't need fuel coming out west entrance and are headed further then gas stations about 10 to 20 miles east of west Yellowstone are much easier to get in and out of with a large rig

Not high jack the thread, but I am making plans to visit Yellowstone next summer and plan on staying at fishing bridge campground.

Is there a certain spot in that CG that I should look to get a spot at. Which is better than others?

All of the sites are tight. They are angled and offset so there's some space at the front curbside of each trailer when parked. We had a big bush right in front of the door so we couldn't open the awning. Not a problem for us since we were only using the trailer for supper, showers and sleeping. The rest of the day we were on the road, hiking, fishing or taking pictures.

As for location within the campground, one site is probably as good as any other (for the purpose we used) and since it's the only campground in the park with full hookups, it's there or drive 40+ miles every day to get in and the same distance to get back to the RV. So, don't go with a "resort expectation" and you won't be disappointed.... It's more a busy, tourist oriented parking lot with hookups. The hookups, for us, were much appreciated. We were there in August and I couldn't imagine trying to sleep with open windows in the heat, even though it does cool down at night, just the residual heat in the trailer would be "oppressive" (for us Michiganders) until the wee hours when things cooled down enough to sleep, by then the humidity was up and the dew was settling, so things would have been 'sticky" at best in a dry camping situation. But those campgrounds were also full to capacity, so people do endure for the "Yellowstone experience".....

Now, if you want "bear encounters" the dumpsters (which are "bear proof") are located on the "cut through" on each loop. Get a campsite close to a dumpster, you'll see a bear or more. We were much closer to the end of the loop, heard some rustling (much bigger than a raccoon) every night when walking the dog, and he went nuts on every walk, but no visual sightings. The people next to the dumpster, however, told us about two bears that were on top of the dumpster, trying to get into it, so......

YNP to West Yellowstone is no problem whatsoever. You will find tractor/trailer rigs delivering goods to the park on this road. Don't plan on taking the north exit into Montana however. This has been under construction since about 1918.

Thanks for all the responses. We'll be there in June and wanted to be sure we can get out ok thru the west entrance.

You can't drive it with your trailer but Bear Tooth Pass is worth the experience. It snowed on us at the summit last summer on July 11th. We got out of the truck and had a snowball fight. Amazing. That said take a few warm things with you to wear.

As everyone has posted, no issues with the roads in Yellowstone. We were there in 2015 also. We came in the south entrance and stayed in West Yellowstone and left out the east entrance. When we were researching for our trip, they said some roads could still be closed in June due to snow. You can get an idea of how roads and some campgrounds look on Google Maps, or Google Earth, just check the date the picture was taken. Here is a link to some web cams in Yellowstone and Google Maps. Enjoy your trip, we sure did. It's on our list to do again.
