Surviving the winter storm on the Oregon coast

So far so good on surviving a big winter storm on the Alsea bay in Walport. Didn't get much sleep last night as the high winds hit maximum at about 3am. It blew my DH Tailgater from the picnic table I had it strapped down. Trailers huge back window has flexing pretty good but held tight so far. Wind gusts are hitting 60-70mph. Standard winds are 25-30. All my other stuff is still secured safely under the trailer.

Wow, I better keep an eye on the national weather, I'll be headed out from Atlanta to Astoria Oregon with my toy hauler in a couple of days. I'm going to leave it winterized until I get there. High winds are miserable with these tall, long trailers. Hang in there.

Drive carefully. The wind in the Columbia Gorge can be brutal any time of year. There are several nice camping spots in the area, though, and I could recommend a couple if you don't know for certain where you will be staying.

Clatskanie, OR and later Boardman, OR. I am familiar with Boardman, not much there. I found one on line in Clatskanie. Perkins Creek Campground, Near where I'll be working.

The county park at Boardman has a lovely RV park. Big spaces that have an open view to the river.

Another place we have stayed is at Deschutes State Rec area. There is a train nearby (but you can't go anywhere in the Gorge without the trains). You get used to them.

After the storm you can walk along the beach and find some stuff that floats in from Japan. Its suppose to be a good summer for it this year. All along the Washington and Oregon Coast.

Go to the museum in Astoria and see the fishing boat that washed up at Cape Disappointment. It got there all the way from Japan. Can't wait to hit the beach and find something special.

Those winter storms can be fierce. I figured I would post my favorite radar sites, the first the meteorologist use. It's my go to site for up to the minute radar.

I have came to the conclusion weathermen only forecast for about 24 hours, and I like to see several days beforehand. :cool:

I just received a warning on this storm, some are calling the Arctic Vortex V2. It's moving fast and is pretty brutal. I captured this to show severity, the eastern seaboard is going to get hammered again. Oklahoma will be right on the rain/ ice boundary again.

The pale blue is ideal conditions for snow. The darker blue is definite snow. The storm is moving fast, with rain right before the freezing temps. Behind this storm, is another front coming to reinforce the cold temps. You can see the last Arctic Vortex slipping off to the lower right into the Atlantic Ocean, with dark blue remaining behind it on the north eastern states.

When we used to live in OR we would go to the coast every year in the middle of the winter to catch those huge storms. We stayed in a Condo so no fear but sure did love those storms! Most RV parks are sheltered enough so the winds won't blow them over...

When in Oregon the ODOT has road information on 511 or 800-977-6368 with the windy problems you might incounter on I-84 it might be a good idea to check. The news just said clocked gorge winds over 100 near PDX today. Safe Trip, Ken

That is good info. I have worked in the Boardman area and the wind definitely can get bad.
It looks like the forecast is for below freezing temps most of the way. The wind is harder to predict it seems.

The gorge winds change so much, I think you just need to pay attention on the day your traveling thru. Winter is worst but, it happens any season.
